Pacific Express Airlines

Mon Jul 30, 2001 1:19 am

Ok...this is for you older folks...

Any of you remember Pacific Express Airlines? They flew mainly here in CA in the early 1980's. They operated with BAC 111's and a few 737-200's, and had that bland black, grey, and white livery with the red titles.

My questions are:

Did they serve ONT and FAT? Did they fly n/s between those two cities? If they did serve those two cities, but not between each other, what cities were served?

What was their service like?

How many of each a/c type did they operate?

Pacific Express did operate in Fresno, roughly from the end of 1982 to early 1984. I can't remember the cities served from FAT right now but when I get a chance I'll see if I have an old schedule.

During the 1981 Paris Air Show, Pacific Express ordered 14 new Bae 146-200 aircraft. These 100 seat aircraft were due to have been delivered during 1984.
Until the delivery of the Bae146 the airline used the BAC 1-11 aircraft.
Sadly the 146 aircraft were never delivered because the
airline failed.
Indeed, looking at an artists impression of the 146 in the airlines colours, it did look rather radical.
White upper fuselage, thick grey line with a black lower fuselage.

The 146's that Pacific Express ordered ended up going to PSA. When Pacific Express started operations the 111's were supplied by BAe as a temporary measure to cover until the 146's were delivered. Pacific Express had to get a special temporary exemption to operate the 111's into SFO since they need not meet SFO's strict noise standards.

I got a chance to fly on them once on the 111's. I flew SFO-MFR-PDX-MFR-SFO. Towards the end they had a code share arrangement with Pan Am.

They also flew Reno- Palm Springs. Man, those 1-11's were loud!
Active loading only, ma'am, keep it moving!

Pacific Express was formed in 1981 by the management of the commuter airline, West Air headed by Terry Ashton, a former Hughes Airwest executive . Its original plan was to begin high frequency, low fare service in the Los Angeles- San Francisco corridor. PSA objexted to the Pacific Express name as it was used for PSA's small package service . Pacific Express also had difficulty obtaining landing slots at the busy airports because of restrictions by the patco strike, which put a damper on the hourly operation. Flights eventually began on Jan 27, 1982 on a Chico-Oakland-San Jose-Palm Springs, Chico-San Francisco-Portland, Boise-Portland-Medford, and San Francisco-Palm Springs route. Several other cities were opened in California and in the Pacific Northwest in 1982 and 1983 . Pacific Express was only profitable for one month of its history . By the fall it was code sharing with Pan Am as Pan Am Pacific Express flights connecting pax at LAX and SFO. Pacific Express went bankrupt on Feb 2, 1984 and suspended ops on its 22 city route system . A week later charter flights were restarted with Boeing 737's but this just for a brief period. Most of its network was assumed by PSA .Hope this helps.

Looking at a few 1982-83 timetables, it seems they never flew to ONT; FAT flights were mostly to SFO and LAX.

Matt the most recent timetable I have is from December '83 (could be the last one). Here is their final route map:
