Dornier 328

Mon Jul 30, 2001 5:17 am

Im going for a trip on a United Express (Air Wisconsin) Dornier 328.

Ive been on a Saab 340 and that wasnt that bad. I actually enjoyed it a little.

But the Dor 328 seems like it would be awfully loud.

Opinions

Thanks

Loud? Try flying a DHC-8-100, thats loud. Actually, the Do328 has been praised by passangers. Unfortunately, it is not too popular with the airlines, I wonder what happened?

The Dornier 328 is probably the quietest or 2nd quietest turboprop airliner. I'm not sure, maybe the Dash 9 is quieter.

But one thing for sure, it is extremely quiet (for a turboprop).

Regards.

I have flown on an Air Wisc/UA Express Do 328 JAC-DEN and found it to very comfortable, the service is good, and seats are good too...

I like the 328 and it is not loud at all. Neither the jet nor the turboprop, although I personally like the latter better for other reasons.

Loud? Look at the six-bladed engines of Dornier 328 and compare them with the engines of a Saab 340 (4-bladed?). In fact, Dornier's 328 came around 10 years after Saab's 340. It is the fastest (335 knots at cuise-speed) AND the most quietest aircraft in its class.

The Dornier 328 prop is a fairly comfortable aircraft. It is not loud...try riding a DC9/M80 with an engine a foot from your head...now, that's loud.

The airlines didn't buy the D328 because of several reasons....the bigest reasons are:

1) bad timing...I believe it entered service in the early to mid 1990s....this was about the same time as the introduction of regional jets.
2) it is more advanced than other similar turboprops...you would think this would be a good thing, but it meant higher aquizition costs than similar sized aircraft.
3) Most commuter lines already had a lot of Dash-8, Saab 340, EMB-120, and J-41 types...they all are around 30-35 seats...most airlines didn't want to add a completly new aircraft type to their fleet.

I've flown Air Wisconsin Do328s DEN-RAP; they're pretty comfortable a/c and not very loud. The high wing makes for good views too!

I hate the 328 jet, I flew on it from MKE to IND and it was terrible..it smoked pretty bad ( I was in the last row) from the engines and it was a horrible ride...I would rather have flown on a NWA CRJ...very nice AC.

I was on Team Lufthansa´s 328 prop - and it´s just terrible - a cramped, lousy loud aircraft with only one overhead bin.
Gimme a Dash 8 anytime. Even F50s or ATRs are better than that Dornier (all from the the very subjective point of view of a passenger).

I flew RDH-PIT with it, very smooth ride. Best flight I ever had ´´cause the plane is very quiet and has a lot of room for a communter plane. BTW, which airline do operate this plane?

Current (US) operators of the Do328

Prop
PSA Airlines (dba US Airways Express) has 25 a/c
Air Wisconsin (dba UA Express) has 15-25 a/c?

Do328 JET
Skywest/Midwest Express connection has about 10 a/c.
ACA (dba Delta connection) has about 15 a/c.
Ozark II has I think 2-5? Anyone know if they are still in business?

Its Skyway/Midwest Express not Skywest that operates the 328Jet. Skywest has CRJs and Brasilias.

You want loud? Try sitting in row 6 on an ATR 42 or 72, now that is loud.........
