Will NWA Bring 744 To MSP Again?

Tue Jul 31, 2001 7:17 am

I remember seeing 744's at MSP ALL the time!!!Why'd they discontinue them, so much better to see than the nasty, faded, old 747-200's which, NEVER take off on any runway except the cross, I saw one leave for Phoenix a week ago, I don't know why, it's not on the schedule, great sight to see, but will MSP EVER see any 747-400's on an actual scheduled basis?

They used to have 744s on the MSP-NRT flight, as well as the short-lived MSP-HKG flight. What doesn't make sense to me is that NW uses old, beat-up 742s on most of the transpacific flights, while the shorter intra-Asia flights get the newer, longer-range 744s.

Good question, will DTW ever see the 742 again????

All of the NW 744s fly out of DTW. Its been a long time since I've seen a Northwest 742 in Detroit except for cargo.

747buff, my guess is CAPACITY..
I live semi-near DTW, and all I see there are 744's, I don't remember the last 742 I saw..

I think it is all because Northwest doesn't really wan't MSP to be their main hub to Asia, for some reason. They keep developing DTW and want most of the traffic to go through that one airport. Weird sceme but NWA isn't the most logical airline, in many respects.

The 400s are out of DTW and JFK. Also some intra-Asia flights.

Soon the 777 will replace the 747-200s.

Dont jump the gun yet, bro. The selection process hasnt even begun for which airplane will replace the 747-200's. I would say the 777 does have the best chance for replacement, but the A340 is also very strong in the running.

There have been many 742's in DTW over the past few weeks...

As for why the 744 is used for the inter-Asia flying is they have a higher seating capacity than the -200 and those flights are always full.

I hope they go with the A340 over that 'twin' Boeing offers.
Keeping the 747-200 would be better than replacing it with a 777. If they had to get a new plane, I say go with the A340.
There is not a single US A340 carrier and that is sad. The A340 is a spectacular aircraft and far more pleasing the the eye and to ride than the 777.

Actually, Braniff727,

In Northwest's configuaration the 747-400 seats 404 passengers, the 747-200B seats 420.
