What Happened To Delta's MD-11s?

Wed Aug 01, 2001 11:14 am

About a month and a half ago, I was flying Swissair from ATL to ZRH on Swissair. I had some time to get to look around the international terminal, which we were in, to see what was there. Of course, because it was ATL, everything was mostly Delta. I didn't see one Delta MD-11 in the terminal. I saw two 777s, a 738, and the rest were just a bunch of 763s. A year ago, when I flew Delta from ATL to BRU, everything was on an MD-11 it seemed like. What happened to all the MD-11s? It was Friday this year and Monday last year, but I think that they would still fly some MD-11s on any day. Where did they all go?

Depending on the time of day, you won't see many heavies. Anytime before 2 PM and after 8 PM, most of the international fleets are over water or in a hangar.

The 777s and 763s you saw were most likely being used for domestic operations.

Fly Delta to Asia. You'll see 'em.

Most of the MD-11's are on Pacific ocean flights. The time of day you were in ATL has mostly European flights out of international terminal.

I happened to fly into ATL from LAX on an MD-11, arriving about 22:30, about 2 weeks ago. Although my flight was domestic, it docked at the international terminal. The best thing is that upgrades to business class are easy, as there are 36 available seats. I had an aisle and window seat all to myself!

If I am correct...Delta is phasing out the MD-11s like all of the rest of the airlines that use them. Also it could have been due to timing...while in Atlanta I didn't see any MD-11s either except for one that was having its engine worked on. They don't have a great safety record at all and have bad fuel economy. Recently a Delta MD-11 on the NGO-LAX route had a problem with another fire...

Hmmmmm, I wouldn't classify the MD-11's fuel economy as bad, but it just isn't as good as the 777's or A330's/A340's. But it does kill those types in payload capacity.

Last weekend I was at Narita for several hours and saw three Delta MD-11's arrive and depart. I also see them in Nagoya frequently.

Come to JFK and you'll see 4-5 maybe more ops per day. For a long time, we (JFK) never got the DL MD-11, now it's a very very common sight.

On occasion, you may see one in the afternoon. But for the most part, the MD-11 (one of my personal favs) is assigned to Pacific and South American routes. Delta does use on on the ATL-MCO route once a day, and any flights to Japan that are nonstops stopover at LAX. I miss PDX getting them, I actually flew from ATL to PDX and back a few times just ride to on a MD-11.

There are also MD-11's going to the Middle-East out of JFK. Two MD-11 flights per day travel from ATL to JFK, then one continues to Tel Aviv (flight 96), and the other flight number (150) ends in JFK. In like a month I think they're going to change flight 92 to a 767-300 though.

I know what you mean, Srbmod, but at least PDX still gets 763s, which I was surprised at... I took a 763 from SLC to PDX and back a couple weeks ago and expected it to be empty, but it was packed to the brim... completely full both times.

If you want to see Delta MD-11's, go to LAX. I was spotting there a few months ago and at one point, there were four DL MD-11's on the ground. Two were departing for NRT and NGO while two were arriving from NRT and NGO. It was great to have four of them running around. As Strickerje said, they also fly JFK-TLV and JFK-CAI-DXB. With only 15 ships in the fleet, it's not a guarantee that you'll see them at a Delta hub.

They retired them yesterday.

Oh wait... that was the L1011.

Are you sure....I thought it was the 777???  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

No No no people...no 777's on south american routes any more....TLV, CAIRO, DXB, NRT, NGO, and occasionally LGW, from ATL, JFK, and LAX...plus some domesitc jumps to MCO....and DL is NOT phasing them out contrary to popular belief.

Delta isnt retiring their MD-11s, they have no immediate plans to do so for 6-9 more years, this according to their website. The MD-11 still represents the the major long haul element of the fleet, neither the 767-300ER or 400ER match it and since they arent taking any more 777-200s, the MD-11 will be the one doing the higher density long haul routes. They dont do Europe anymore, they do the transpacific and JFK-Cairo/ Middle East routes as well as some S. American routes although I noticed that the ATL-Brazil flights were replaced with 763s.

Mikeymike, you must know something Delta doesn't. According their website, they will be phasing out their MD-11's over the next six years.

Among others, DL operates the M11 on routes to Asia and South America, and certain US routes (such as MCO and JFK from ATL).

Domestic routes include ATL-LAX and CVG-LAX (for NRT and NGO flights). Delta is taking delivery of 6 more 777's, the next one will arrive in early 2002. The Asian routes are LAX-NRT, LAX-NGO, JFK-NRT and ATL-NRT.

Yeah I've noticed an awful lot of MD-11s flying in and out of JFK all of a sudden. I've yet to see any 777s. What gives?

I was on one yesterday, from ATL to MCO, enroute to the last L-1011 flight. It was N815DE, and I enjoyed it very much. The window panes had DC-10 stamped on them. The video entertainment system was broken. The seats were just like seats in most of Delta's other aircraft. But their business class seats had the most legroom I have ever seen, and I just flew first class on AA and UA recently. It doesn't even compare. By the way, I don't understand why they use a long range jet on such a short flight. It's sort of like when Air Florida used a 707 for flights from St. Petersburg to Orlando and Miami.

Delta has that kind of demand for ATL-MCO, and the MD-11 probably goes somewhere long range after returning to ATL during the day.

Yes I'm sure. It had 3 engines so it had to be the MD-11. Everyone knows the 777 has 4 engines.

Bob - DL uses the MD-11 on ATL-MCO because it makes money for them. That plane is flying in between long hauls, and when a plane is on the ground, it does not make $$$. Also, the capacity on that route is there, that's why they use a 260 seat jet.

Its a shame though we don't get MD-11s up here, only Swissair brings them in occasionally.

Don't they have the project to sell them to Cargo operators within the next 2-3 years?
