My Experience On The Last L1011

Wed Aug 01, 2001 12:37 pm

First off, remember how a few weeks ago when someone asked if we had ever flown with the same flight attendant more than once? Well one of the flight attendants on the last L1011 was my flight attendant on a Delta L1011 two years ago. She was formerly with Pan Am. In the airport in Orlando, the jetway had a balloon arch over it and people were taking photographs like crazy. News reporters were all around. I had the pleasure of meeting several airliners.net people on MCO. Somehow we all manged to find each other. In the air, we were offered champagne and one of the Vice Presidents made a toast over the PA to 28 years of L1011 service at Delta. I also had the pleasure of sitting beside one of the big investors of Gemini Jets. We landed in ATL, had the water gun salute, and taxied to the gate. Robert Bradley (L1011) and I both went to the lower galley before exiting the plane. As we came out of the jetway, we were presented with a commemorrative certificate, signed by the Captain, and a farewell poster. It was sure great meeting everyone.

Sounds like lots of fun. Did the flight seem full of aviation enthusiasts?? I wonder if there were actually any real Pax Big grin.

In my opinion, one out of five of the passengers were not aware of the fact that the plane was on its last trip. The rest were fully aware of it.

Sad day, as this plane is by far my fave plane and always has been. One small thing however...this was not the last L-1011...it was the last Delta L-1011...the last American L-1011 flight will be in the hands of ATA, and it will likely come in 3-5 years. THAT will be a sad day.  Crying

There are still U.S.-based L-1011's left? Well, this makes my day... I'll have to be on the last ATA one. By the way, not to change the subject, but what major U.S. airlines still have DC-10's, and when's the last one? Hopefully I'll be able to get on that one also...

It was great meeting you Cody, what happened when we all got off though? Oh well, it was fun. I missed my 777 flight after all!

Said it before but heck, why not again, what a nice plane the 1011 was, and still is.

Strickerje:

Northwest, Continental, Ryan International (aka SunTrips), and Hawaiian Airlines are the only airlines still using DC-10s for pax service. Of course, Emery Worldwide, Gemini Air Cargo, and FedEx still use them for cargo as well.

Thanks. I take it that United and American have already retired theirs.  Sad

Omni Air International flies the DC-10 for military charters. I flew on N540AX on June 4 from Baltimore to Kuwait via Rhein Main Germany. Anyone know what World has done with it's DC-10s? They had the last DC-10 built in its fleet.

The last DC10 built was originally delivered to Nigeria Airways

AA retired their last DC-10 on November 28th. It operated flight 8 from Honolulu to DFW.

Rather than reposting, see my experience under the post "Who Went On The Last DL L1011?"
It was really nice meeting you, Cody, along with A330300, DL_Mech, Dash80, and the many others that were there.

I don't see yesterday as a sad day. In fact, sort of like in death, we should celebrate that the L10 was able to fly for 28 years with an incredible safety and dispatch record.

The sad truth is that the plane was getting old and parts are becoming more scarce. This makes it expensive to operate, and its time for this, like all good things, to come to an end.

Flight 1949 A Special Thanks.

Thu Aug 02, 2001 4:28 am

On Wednesday night I was reading a post from twa767 (I hope I got the name right) with regards to flight 1949. Until then I didn't even know that Delta was retiring the aircraft.

I'd like to take this moment to thank Dan for his insight and hard work in getting togeather a seat list and keeping us informed as to who what when and where. Most important Getting me through Atlanta Hartsdale to my flight to EWR.

So thank you Dan for your efforts for 1949.
