Who Went On The Last DL L1011?

Thu Aug 02, 2001 12:42 am

I tried to get on that plane but could not make it. So, whoever was on the trip, please share your experiences. I bet it was a fun day!

I will type a report up ASAP. Has anyone thought of a last flight website with all our pics and videos?

I was on Delta airlines flight 1949.

The aircraft and it's captain both retired on the same day. So I had a chance to talk with the captains Wife and two sons (One was a captain with TWA And the other was a first officer for Us air express.)

I think one of the most touching moments were when we left Orlando and the entire Ground crew were out to say good by to the plane and to it's Captain. For an instant it almost seemed that the Captain and the Tristar were one in the same.

Of coure when the aircraft took off I and just about everyone else went camera happy. I Brought nemourus Camreas and Camcorder batteries Which I actually wound up loaning to the captains family.

There was a tost while the plane was in flight. There also was coverage by a local Atlanta TV station.

Regretfully the flight crew had wanted to do a fly by but could not because of time constraints being the plane was already almost 2 hours late because of a mechanical before leaving Atlanta (Go Figure.)

When we had landed Some of us had stayed on the aircraft and joined by others (I do not have the list of names it's still in my camera bag.) Than before Leaving I went to seat 41 and signed my name on the overhead compartment door

"Nice Job L-10-11"
Signed Thomas R. "Dasheighty" Sczepkowski, Jr EWR"

When they were ready to take the aircraft away I was half way up the Jet way when I realized that I had left my ATL EWR ticket on my seat So I returned to get it But only a few delta employees were on the Plane I turned to step off the plane when I realized that I was the Last Revenue passenger to disembark Delta Flight 1949 The last flight for the Delta Airlines Tristar L-10-11

(I Just hope no one was hidining in a closet.)

I was there. It was nice to meet so many Airliners.net members at MCO. Now I can put a face to the names. Since the flight was so late getting in to MCO, I had to rebook my connection to IAD. The agent put me on a non-stop Delta Express flight from MCO to IAD. I protested loudly. I said I must go on flight 1949, so he put me back on that, and I had three hours before my new flight to IAD. During that layover, DL_Mech was very nice and gave me a tour of the hangers. We went aboard several Delta aircraft, and I was permitted to open a window exit and the main cabin door on a 727. It was much easier than I thought it would be. He even photographed me under the nose wheel of L-1011 aircraft 728. Thanks Louis. It was really appreciated. I also was taken on the Flying Hospital, an L-1011 that used to belong to PSA, and I even got to go into the downstairs lounge.
While on aircraft 728, I was permitted to go down to the below deck galley in the elevator. What an experience! Cody and A330300 were with me for this, and they both seem to be very fine people. I enjoyed talking to them.

During my tour of the Delta hangers by DL_Mech, I bought a video, "Farewell Tri-Star L-1011," which is a commemorative video of the history of the aircraft. I watched it twice last night, and I believe it said Delta's first L-1011 flight carried only 39 passengers. The video only runs three minutes, but it is something I'll treasure forever.
