Concorde Airports In The USA

Thu Aug 02, 2001 3:32 am

Does anyone know what airports the Concorde landed at in its history?

I heard it has landed at CVG before.

It once landed at ATL , the skylarks (an atlanta tour group) chartered the aircraft. The atlanta journal used to have photos of the occasion on its site but they seemed to have dissapeared. Too bad the concorde was never a regular at ATL  Big grin

On charters, BA Concordes have been to Andrews Air Force Base, Oshkosh, Pittsburgh, Dallas, Las Vegas, Honolulu, Colorado Springs, Waco, Miami, Boeing Field, Oakland, Boston to name some. Both individual charters and in the case of Oakland, part of a round the world tour, (LAX and SFO don't allow SST's).
Only JFK scheduled after return to service.

Landed here at PDX about 10 years ago. They did a $500 "flight to nowhere" over the Pacific Ocean. Wish I could have been on board. I watched it take off over my head. Very loud and very impressive.

Air France also brought their Concorde to Las Vegas. I've also seen a British Airways Concorde at Lexington, Kentucky.

It's been to a lot of airports. The same AF Concorde that sadly crashed a year ago visited FLL in 1998 on a charter. Scheduled Concorde service in the US used to also go to DFW (via IAD, until sometime in the 1980s), MIA (1984-1991, thrice weekly BA MIA-IAD-LHR), and IAD (until 1991, I think). It would be really nice if BA re-started MIA-IAD-LHR. Doubt it will happen though.

Back when they were originally building them, the manufacturer sent them on a tour of several US airports to drum up sales and acceptance of the sonic boom problem. It was open to the public at BOS and I was able to walk through it.

A BA Concorde was in Seattle late 80s or so. I remember thinking it would have been a much more fun flight than the comparatively mundane 727 or 737 that I flew on that day.

The Concorde has been to LAX. It has also been to Brown Field in San Diego. It was there for the Air America Airshow in the mid 80's.

BA sent a Concorde to Kansas City International back in 1995. I remember one of my friends doing a current event on it. I was in third grade at the time, and didn't care, now I wish I had!

Add Comumbus & Dayton -- I've seen Air France fly them to both. It was at the air show in Dayton at least once and a couple times as a charter. I remember also remember it here in CMH at a few times as a charter.

It was the Air Space America 88 (as in 1988) at Brown Field Airport south of San DIego, it was an Air France chartered to take people on a tour of the Pacific.....I think the announcer mentioned something about Hawaii (SP?) but it was not scheduled to land.

All of us who were there got a great view of the plane, as it was on final approach just a couple of hundred feet from touchdow, the plane suddenly applied power and did a turn arround to try the landing for the second time; the announcer said the French pilot mentioned over the radio that someone was on the runway, it turned out to be a big fan of the plane who wanted to take the best picture.

BA Concorde landed in Jackson, Mississippi - no, I'm not kidding - in the mid to late 80's. I have some video of it somewhere. It flew supersonic from UK to NY, then subsonic to JAN. It was chartered by some tour group.

IT has been to DTW on quite a few occassions, it almost seemed like it appeared on a once a year basis back in the 80s when travel group NOMADS chartered it.

I remember the first time the Concorde landed at Detroit, there were two of them both with British Airways. This was something like 1985-6. One of the concordes was still in the old (at that time) British Airways red union jack while the other was in the dark blue. This was before they put up the new county buildings at DTW so their was an open field by 21R/3L.

That day, I had heard that something like 100,000-200,000 people showed up. They had portapoopers and snack stands set up. I was a little kid, I remember waiting a couple hours there when one finally landed. The second one arrived 15 minutes later. About an hour or so later, the first concorde took off, did a circle and came by and did a low pass. The second one took off some 15 minutes later and did the same.

After that it seemed like the concorde flew in every year or two for NOMADS, it was British Airways all the time though.

Finally a couple years back Air France flew one in for NOMADS it was parked by the Exec terminal for 2 days. IT never even made the news as far as I know. I found out from my brother who worked for Spirit Airlines at the time. That is the last time I seen one at DTW.

Don't forget that Tony Blair visited Denver International in a BA Concorde. Also, add IAD and MIA to the list.

Scheduled U.S. Concorde cities have been JFK (Air France & BA), IAD (AF & BA) and DFW (BA Concorde operating as a Braniff flight). But they have been to so many U.S. airports on charter flights that you can name all the airports until the cows come home, and still not have them all. I do remember when the Concorde came to ATL back in 1985, every single t.v. station in ATL (at least those with news deptarments) interrupted programming just to show it landing, one of the few times the stations here ever interrupted programming to show an airplane landing, the other time being when the NASA 747 Shuttle Transporter landed at ATL back in the 1970s with the shuttle Enterprise on it's back.

Srbmod, you left out one US city that had schueled Concorde service, MIA (as an extension of the IAD route on BA; 1984-1991). I also remember hearing that the AF Concorde that crashed was supposed to go to CVG after landing at JFK.

British Airway's use to bring it into BWI reguarly on some sort of schedule service about 10 years ago. Since I've been there it's been there twice due to weather in JFK.
