LY 744F To Be Dry Or Wet Leased?

Fri Aug 03, 2001 3:05 am

Are El Al's new 744F's will be dry or wet leased? How many is LY going to get? It was mentioned several times before that they will get 2, but the August issue of Airliner World says there are going to be 3 of them.
Thanks in advance.

And I have 2 other questions concerning these future 744Fs:
1. Is LY really going to take out of service all 6 remaining 742s, including the 2 cargos? Many pilots and all the flight engeneers (...) are opposed to this highly needed move.

2. If yes, and LY leases 744Fs, willt hese planes get a paint scheme? Because even though I don't adore the new livery, it is still something better to display the name and an Israeli flag than just the word "Cargo" or Hertz...

The same article says that 48 LY F/E's will lose their jobs as soon as the 742's are retired since there are no other a/c in LY's fleet that need F/E's. LY had 8 742's a couple of years ago, they were/going to be replaced with 4 772's and 2/3 744F's, meaning that some pilots will lose their jobs as well. The situation would be even worse if the new 744F's are going to be wet leased.

hey,

I believe the 747-400s are going to be leased from boeing. Also i guess you already know that they ordered a few more 400s also from boeing.
My cousin flies LY's 747-200s, he will proabobly go back to flying the 747-400s after.

Also again,

the flight engineers will be laidoff, the rest of the 747-200 pilots will fly all the other planes in the fleet. especially 777 and 747-400, 767.

where did u hear 747-400F?

Hi Yoni,
where did you hear a pax 744 has been ordered??
I've read (many articles) that LY was considering taking a 4th 772, and leasing 2 744F to replace the 2 742F that the airline wants to sell.

Sorry, but there is no 744s on order for LY.

LY is retiring 8 planes:
6 742s and 2 757s.
Those 8 planes would be replaced by a 777 and 2 744Fs.

LY is going on a lease from Atlas Air for those 744Fs. Closing the 742 fleet causes many problems at LY as was mentioned before, I still dont know whether it would be a wet or a dry lease.
One problem with those a/cs are the engines, while LY's 744s are powered by PW4056, Atlas's 744s are powered by GE's engines.

And would it be difficult to find 2 P&W powered 744F?
Or the best solution could be that Atlas or another GE client makes the maintenance job? When LY leased MD-11 with the crew (btw, one can ask himself if these are still LY flights...), Swissair Technik in ZRH has been awarded the maintenance.

I am leaving for the mountains on Sunday, and from there I have no easy connection to the net; I hope I won't miss too much interesting news posted here...

Last I heard the LY B744F deal feel thru. Up until about 2 or 3 weeks ago LY was talking to GECAS about taking 2 GE powered aircraft for delivery Sep 01, and Summer 02. From my understanding the price was a big issue with LY asking for nearly a 40% discount of GECAS proposed lease rates.
While yes these were to be GE powered aircraft versus LY's own PW powered B744's the deal included both a large spares inventory plus engine overhaul clause.
Having a split B744 fleet in engine types is really not that big a deal, several carriers including Air New Zealand, Qantas, Malaysian, SAA all operate more than one engine type on their fleets.

As EL Al 001 already said probably LY will wet lease those B747-400F's from good old Atlas (as they already do sometimes at AMS). Furtermore, the freighterswill probably not have LY c/s as none of the current freighters have LY titles and some are very very white.

Seems like we'll see some Atlas B747-400F's more at AMS. Anyway heavy maintenace for Atlas B747-400's is at FRA and sometimes KLM does some work on the freighters at AMS.

Regards
Laurens

Hi Michael! Would you happen to know which 752's are to be retired? I'm guessing those are going to be the oldest remaining 752's in LY's fleet (4X-EBM and EBR?)?

Have a good time at the mountains, David/Toda,Reisinger!

RE: No 747-400F Leasing Or Buying

I just checked with my uncle.

ELAL is NOT leasing or buying any 747-400f, but they are still considering it.
