TWA At ORD

Sun Aug 05, 2001 6:32 am

Before 1991 TWA flew ORD-LHR, but did they fly to any other international destinations out of Chicago? I know that Pan Am flew ORD-FRA, but what about destinations like CDG, FCO, ZRH etc who flew these before United started service to Europe? Also what were the domestic destinations that TWA served from ORD, and could it have ever been considered a TWA hub?

I think they may have had CDG at one time. They were a domestic hub for awhile in the 70s based on the number of flights. They were smaller than AA and US and eventually downsized their ORD operations.

Here's some of their destinations in 1984. Nonstop Chicago O'Hare to Boston; Columbus and Dayton, Ohio; Laguardia; Newark; JFK; Kansas City; and St. Louis. Does anyone remember TWA either opening or considering Midway a hub in the early 1990's. I read somewhere they were adding a lot of flights from MDW, but I can't find anything supporting this in recent years.

In 1958 TW had a nonstop 1649 from ORD to Orly, but dunno if they ever flew that with jets.

In 1984 you could fly to ORD from

AMS nonstop KL
BRU 1-stop SN
CPH n/s SK
FRA n/s LH and Capitol
LHR n/s BA and TW
LUX-KEF on FI
MXP n/s AZ
FCO n/s AZ
CDG n/s AF
SNN n/s on Transamerica, it says
VIE n/s RJ
TLV-AMS on LY
Zagreb n/s on JU
ZRH n/s on SR

They also had flights from ORD to DCA, DEN,LAS and ABQ. I know all about the flights to ABQ because I used them to and from college from 1968-1972. TWA had a very busy operation at ORD around that time. ABQ alone had 3-4 nonstop flights per day.

In addittion to the cities Cody listed, TW served SFO/LAX/TUS/PHX/ABQ/COS /DEN? from ORD.

Back in the 50's and 60's TW had and used authorities from ORD to FWA and a number of points in OH enroute to the east.

At one time AA, TW and UA duked it out with quite a few flights between ORD & LGA. (one of my most memorable sights was on a TW 727' flying a hold for LGA and banking over the lighted Statue of Liberty on a cold January night in 79).

This photo shows the activity TWA had at La Guardia in the late 60s. The caption talks about their "blue chip service" to O'Hare.

In the late 1960's, TWA operated hourly "Blue Chip" service between LGA and ORD. AA and UA also operated a similar hourly service. All three carriers used 727's (100's). Internationally, TW flew from ORD nonstop to FRA for many years with 707's.
