CI Almost Crashed On The Same Runway That SIA...

Sun Aug 05, 2001 7:59 am

According to an exlcusive report from Taiwan's Ettoday.com on July 25, A China Airlines A300-600R almost crashed on the same runway at Taipei where Singapore Airlines flt 006 crashed in last October.

CI194 from KHH to TPE was in approaching stage around 9.31am on July 10, 2001 (local time) when the captain realized that it is going to land on the WRONG runway. The jet was about 300m above the ground. The captain decided to Go-around and land in another runway instead.

An eyewitness said that if the Airbus landed on 05L/23(?), there will be not enough distance for the plane to stop and will hit the OBJECT that SIA 747 also struck last year.

Officials from China Airlines said that this is a normal situation that pilots decide to use another runway for approching. The pilots has been notified that the runway that CI jet originally going to land is closed.

Maybe i made a mistake in my first post. But, descending from cruising to landing the clearance to the aircraft given by the controllers should notify him which runway is he suppose to land on. I guess both runways 05L/R has ILS approaches? If so, the pilot needs to set the frequency of the ILS for the given runway and i don't think he will even approach the wrong runway given that he tuned in to the correct ILS frequency for 05L?

Or is there no ILS at all?

Yes, if there is ILS, the pilots should have been able to see the diff. The diff. would get larger and larger as the acft approach the wrong rwy. Maybe this is the reason why the pilots knew that he/she was on the wrong rwy.

Red panda, you have a point, but why does the pilot spot it at such near distance to touchdown? When he is approaching the runway to land he will sometimes need to refer to his instruments even though if he is doing a visual landing, so i guess he should be able to spot the mistake early?

Who knows?! Maybe the pilots are talking about girls when they were landing.

Can someone explain if you are landing on say Runway 25L doesn't that mean left, so if you were approaching then Runway 25R you would see the 2 runways and say hey, the left runway is a bit on the right side.
Or don't some countries use left and right  Wink/being sarcastic

Erhem!SQ does not hire bad pilots. Now,this is bad.If Taipei Airport is not going to get its act together,it's finished. There will be lots more crashes.

At least SIA pilots fly for the love of flying, not like some others fly for the sake of money.

I totally agree with Mr BA and GUNDU. At least SQ pilots, does not give problems like unnecessary strikes.

Spoke to quite a lot of them before and that is why i conclude to that statement. Maybe you can prove me wrong? Yap, i agree they don't go for unnecessary strikes. No point doing that though.

I think the best example of how bad carriers treat good pilots is Cathay Pacific.

I've seen some idiotic statements on this forum before, but this one's a contender for the gold cup

Also, the Tower Control asked the Taiwanese captain TWICE that if he is landing at the RIGHT runway, and the pilot thinks that he is landing towards the right one.

I wonder how often this happens at ATL. Since it has four (soon to be five) parallel runways.

HkgSpotter1: Uh, the fact is Gundu is right and you're wrong my dear.

Anyway, it's good that it didn't crash. Is their an investigation on it? ATC error maybe?
