CO SYD-LAX

Sun Aug 05, 2001 12:11 pm

In 1990, my family took a trip from Sydney to Los Angeles on Continental Airlines. Being so young at the time, I didn't know what plane I was flying on, and neither did my parents. I was just wondering about this and thought maybe someone would know. So if anyone would please tell me what plane CO flew from SYD-LAX in 1990, I would very much appreciate it. Thank you very much for your time.

Sincerely,

Either a DC-10 or a 747 was also used by CAL on South Pacific routes as well.

Okay, CO flew DC-10's across the Pacific via HNL to LAX as those DC-10 do not have the range to fly SYD-LAX direct. At that time, only 747SP (aka Mini-Me) could only fly this route non-stop as it flew at high altitude and it was built for those purpose. With the introduction of Boeing 747-400 aircrafts, 747SP's are history and QF only uses them on medium-thin routes (ie SYD to MNL).

I hope the above explanation helps. If you need to know any further information, please let me know.

Most likely a 742 with a stop in HNL. A DC-10 is also possible.

CO used to fly to the south pac with D10 and 747's.

They use to operate

LAX - HNL - AKL - BNE/MEL
LAX - HNL - SYD
LAX - HNL - SYD - AKL

Thank you so much for all the information. I'm sorry this thank you came so late but I haven't been online for a few days. However, my mom says that we didn't have a stopover anywhere. Was there any direct flight they operated? In any case, thank you for all your help.

Sincerely,

As I was working for CO at LAX from '88 to '94, I can say with absolute certainty that CO has never flown LAXSYD non-stop. They had no aircraft capable of flying that distance at the time. UA/NW/QF were the only carriers doing so then.
