Next UA mid-con from SFO. Any guesses?

Sun Nov 26, 2017 4:31 am

UA recently added SFO-CVG; SFO-DTW; SFO-BNA (2 x's) on mainline. SFO-OMA was added on UAX.

I predict SFO-DSM. Any other guesses?

CMH, SDF, MEM, ICT, MKE, or DSM

Would love to see UA add SFO-CMH

MKE has a WN flight to SFO already, (although CMH has a flight to OAK), could MKE be done with an e175?

Looks like Columbus is the 14th most populous city in the US. Also looks like the economy is strong.

SFO - CMH shows 1,840 nmi. I'm guessing the range is too great for the E-175. Maybe the A319 would be profitable option.

SFO-COS? IIRC, SkyWest has a maintenance base there and that might help justify such a route.

I believe UAX did SFO-COS on the CRJ-200 a few years back. Maybe another go of it would be successful.

Seems just outside practical range, especially given the propensity for ATC sluggishness in SFO. SFO-STL is the longest routine E75 I find at 1735 miles and some have reported it runs into weight issues. SFO-MKE is 110 miles farther at 1845.

MKE and MSN. I believe the WN flight is seasonal.

Depends if you want it to connect it to the TPAC banks. Gates are at a premium in SFO especially at the domestic banks that connect to the international banks.

If it’s for purely O&D than I can’t see CMH; I don’t know offhand what it is but last I looked the PDEW isn’t there for a mainline flight.

Possible they could do:
KSFO - KISP - A320
KSFO - TJSJ - B777-300
KSFO - TNCM - B767-400

I hope you are kidding with most of those. The only ones left are really MKE, CMH, and maybe TUL and MEM.

I would guess DSM. Especially since F9 just announced seasonal DSM-SFO...

I could see SFO-MSN with a 319/73G. MSN has a growing tech industry that may benefit from a nonstop link. That being said, there are a lot of convenient 1 stops to the Bay Area from MSN as is.

I agree. F9 is seasonal and I think 3x per week. If UA came in with a well timed daily flight they could make this work on an E175 and either coexist with F9 or knock them off the route. It’s 1,550nm which is about 200 fewer miles than STL-SFO. Last I checked DSM-SFO is just over 100 maybe closer to 120 PDEW depending on the quarter.

Didn’t even know they pulled it! Also appears they pulled their IAD flight. I’m surprised they have 2X to LAX and no SFO.

This would be a nice thread for Vertical Scope to offer taking the route of serving mid-con a-netters
with the oft requested hover-over airfield/city names for airport identifiers (and airline names for airline codes).
Demand is high and the goal obtainable.

Columbus makes a lot of sense. The others, unlikely (ISP, JAX, MEM). SXM and SJU? Absolutely no way. No market for these two destinations.

COS was served before, the loads were atrocious. Also, there are far less RJs rotating through SFO like there was back then. COS is a RJ pilot base and mainly RJ mx facility. Could be tried again, but probably better options out there.

I’m surprised YEG doesn’t have a SFO link with either of the Star carriers. I would think it would be able to support at least one E-175 per day. (You said mid-continent, didn’t specify which country)

UA flew the market from Feb '06 to June '16.

DSM I could see. Its a strong market for UA that somewhat mirrors OMA and they have that flight, plus it just got F9 seasonal service.

Some people have mentioned MSN but I'm not so sure, MSN doesnt even have IAH service on UA, and Im not sure they would want to overfly DEN. Its also a DL heavy city that see's lots of mainline through MSP for westbound connections and they also have a SLC flight. But if the numbers are there and on the chance it is MSN would probably be on the E75.

The fact they added nonstops to cities which already had SFO service (DTW, CVG) as opposed to an untapped market in CMH made no sense to me. UA's added mainline back to ORD and DEN but has never taken a shot on CMH-SFO.

Maybe someday, though.

I just noticed that AA has added CLT-SJC in May18. UA really needs to start a route to CLT from SFO to defend that market! It is not as though they don't have the pax. BoA Pacific headquarters are in SFO plus all the pacific traffic. I know many will say that UA likes to route through ORD, but SFO has a lot more options and both the Bay Area and CLT are booming in growth and business.

I would put money on UA starting SFO-CLT once the new Concourse A North opens at CLT in the summer.

but aren't gates at a premium for ua in sfo? and i've always considered the bulk of traffic on this route to be originating in clt or connecting thru clt. ua flyers originating in sfo can go thru ord or iad

But shouldn't there be enough traffic and demand to handle the route at least once a day? AA has very little competition on CLT-West Coast routes and now that Charlotte is growing faster than expected, the local traffic is there. Plus there should be plenty of business travelers with the financials on both ends.
