CPAP Use Inflight?

Fri Dec 01, 2017 5:43 pm

I use a CPAP machine for my severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) due to the airway obstruction that comes with craniofacial anomalies (Treacher Collins syndrome). I travel frequently (domestically and internationally), so I take my machine with me.

I've been wondering lately if I can use my CPAP machine inflight. It's becoming more difficult for me to sleep on intercontinental flights. I'm almost always seated in economy (except for Norwegian's Premium Economy on my recent DEN-LGW roundtrip and my AA flight from GRU-DFW last week, where I had an upgrade to business class), so the upright posture and lack of space do not help. It was especially difficult, even impossible, on my recent Australian trip (particularly the transpacific legs, LAX-MEL on QF and SYD-LAX on AA). I was able to sleep a bit better on the aforementioned recent DY and AA flights where I was in a premium cabin (as the seats reclined a lot more than in Y), but not completely.

I noticed in the AA Flagship Business compartments on my GRU-DFW 77W there were standard 110V mains outlets (like those at home), but my carryon with my CPAP securely packed away in it was stowed overhead. On my Norwegian DEN-LGW 787 in Premium, I didn't see any mains outlets (perhaps there were, but if so, where were they?).

I have more intercontinental trips in the future (definitely a US to Australia in May), so I would like to know whether I can use my CPAP inflight. I plan on using at least Premium Economy on my future LH/ULH flights just so I can get a more comfortable seat and actually get some sleep.

Do any of you use CPAP, and if you do, do you use it on your long-haul overnight flights?

Usually those outlets have a fairly low wattage limit, meant for running a laptop at most. How many watts does your CPAP draw?
