Aircraft you are/ were always excited to fly on

Thu Feb 01, 2018 4:17 pm

What are the aircraft type you always looked forward to being on?

Only two come to mind for me:

747
BAC 146.

I would go out of my way for each.

For some reason I’m always super excited to board a Triple Seven. Maybe it’s because of these huge engines.

For me, it's the 747 (my all time favourite) and the 787 (better pressurized, better air quality, and cuts down on jet lag feeling, plus I've managed to get premium seating each time I've flown on a 787).

I kind of have a thing for the McDonnell Douglass t-tails, so it would be the MD-80/90/717 for me. Especially the MD-80 since they won't be around much longer.

Mine has to be the 747 - loved seeing them nose on when I travelled as a child and love the flights I have had on them so far!

Hmm, aside from any new aircraft type in the log, the 747 has to take the cake for me. Aside from that, there’s something I love about the 777 and I always look forward to a flight on the E-Jets from a comfort perspective.
Nothing compares to taking off in an empty 757 with full thrust!

Mostly any aircraft, that is new to me. The only aircraft I am excited in, which I already had, are either aircraft with more than two engines (so today mostly 747, A340 or A380) and some smaller props like ATR72 or Dash-8.

I always like Embraers 190/195. They are comfortable, I like the cozy feeling of the cabin without being cramped like in other small planes and you have a guaranteed aisle/window seat.

I'm always excited to fly on a new aircraft type, and have fond memories of several flights on unique planes. Among the types with more than 2 entries in my log, I get excited for any DC9/MD80 derivative, 757 or 767, and I will intentionally pick those whenever there is a choice.

I was also very fond of the OO E-120s when they were flying.

I was really conflicted on a recent trip. I was excited to book an AA MD83 for the first time in about a decade, flying DFW-TPA. The flight was cancelled and I was rerouted via MIA on a 763. I was thrilled to get the 767, which I had only previously flown with Delta, but still very sad to miss the MD, which is about to be gone for good.

The A300 - especially the old B2/B4 variants. Cant explain my weird fascination for that bird! The 747-200 series - sadly not an option anymore.

The Bae146 used to be an obsession - but my first few flights on one CCU-PBH-KTM were underwhelming.

Want to take an A310 flight soon before they disappear. Whats the best place to get on one? Canada?

I'm excited to fly to anything but a 737. Nothing against it, I just fly on it allllllll the time. The A32x is getting there too.

The 777 was my first widebody airplane and I always get excited to fly on it.

717 & F100 , they're becoming more and more rare around the world but becoming increasingly more prevalent where I live, which gives them a more unique feel.

Always excitied to fly on bac 1-11's from Gatwick on the annual family holidays in the early 80's . Especially as we always seemed to board via the rear air stairs with the APU screaming above your head

Any new type or registration I haven't flown before or that I know is in limited production numbers. Some I still like after, others like the Max and Neo types, once I fly them in May I won't care if I fly.again. I am a fan of MDs from piston liners through DC8/9/10 and MD11/90/717. I get excited just seeing them let alone flying them.

As an enthusiast, just about any new plane would get me excited. Otherwise, I'd have to say...

Boeing 747. To me, it always meant I was going somewhere far both geographically and culturally from what I considered home. In one case, it was going somewhere that already felt like home to me for the first time, the other time it was living half a world away in Japan where I quickly learned to make the place feel like home.

If I could go back in time, I'd probably tell my 10-year-old self he was out of his mind for getting so overly excited about a damn A320.

I love flying on an E135 on the left side of the plane in the single seat.

Was excited the first I flew on a 747... It was to New Zealand. I was seated next to a Williams Jet Engine Engineer.... He had just had so much knowledge of all things aeronautics and was willing to share.... Great flight (for me.... not so much for my wife... LOL)

Excited the first time I flew on a 777.... It was to San Francisco.... I started in Albany, New York at 6AM in a snow storm. At the ticket counter everyone was behaving very badly. I was extremely patient and soft spoken... Mentioning I only wished to arrive to Tucson Arizona before night fall and didn't care how they routed me. They routed me everywhere... but each and every plane that I flew on I was in first class (even the CRJ700) ..It was a fun day.... So my first 777 flight was in first class..
learning never stops.

I would be excited to fly on an MD80 again. I last flew on one of Allegiant's in January, it may have been my last, unless I plan on flying East through Atlanta in the next couple of years.

Same with the 757, except it seems like they're slowly becoming a transatlantic/long-range airliner exclusively, as opposed to higher-density routes like in the past.

Lastly, any widebody on a longhaul flight; it feels like an adventure.

Others I love are the rear engined planes. MD80/90 series, 727, CRJS.

All of this is based off the types currently bookable on major airlines, so unfortunately no 707.
First is any type or sub-type I haven't flown before, the most notable being the 787, A350, MD-90.
After that, I will always try to get any DC-9 variant, 747, or 767.

I'm usually most pumped to fly a 757, a 777, an a380 an a350 or any rare type or type thats quickly being retired. 747s, 767s, a340-600.

Boring planes that don't excite me much include the 737, the a320s, any regional jets, and the 787 (looks like a minivan and just seems blah)

Airbus A340-300. I always loved the sound those tiny CFMs produced at full throttle.

The other one was the MD11, but, unfortunately, the only chance I almost got to fly on one was in the Mid 90's and it was changed to a 767 because of a (big surprise) problem with the MD11 :(

A380. The comfort and noise levels are just amazing.

For me, flying on the 747 was always something extra special. From my first flight on Pan Am to my last flight about three years ago, she'll always be the Queen to me. I was very fortunate in recent years to fly in J on the upper deck (CX, AF). Even though you're fully aware of being on a massive plane, upstairs felt exclusive, like a private jet.

But as long as it's not too expensive, I would go out of my way to fly a aeroplane I've never been on before.

In my younger days, I would take a worse schedule to fly a 757 or a DC10. In the late '80's and early '90's, AA flew a number of domestic routes with DC10's, and I'd always try to get on one. 757's were once fairly common at SNA and it as always a rush to feel that plane have full thrust on takeoff only to power down over Newport Beach.
Today I really love the 77W just to hear the engine start-up and when they spool up on the takeoff roll.

I might also add that I was excited to fly the Avro RJ, as the exemplar that brought me to London for the first time once flew for NW Airlink - Mesaba from my home airport DTW, besides the unique appearance of quadjet with wings protruding from the top of the fuselage ("unique" though I know there exists Russian cousin An-148)
