Forbes: New Indicators of JetBlue-Alaska Merger

Tue Feb 06, 2018 3:30 pm

In an article in Forbes, contributor Ted Reed suggests that 2018 already has some indicators on whether this merger will eventually happen.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/tedreed/20 ... c0740440cf

Reed compares a potential AS-B6 hookup to the takeover of America West by US Airways. He calls it a "barbell" merger. AS is strong in the west, while B6 is strong in the east.

Reed's main argument is that the two airlines are doing similar things in relation to unions, international partnerships, reducing amenities in coach (seat pitch, etc.), etc. Also AS will be taking on Airbus equipment as its merger with Virgin America continues, so the learning curve with B6 Airbus equipment will be less. Even if AS eventually gets rid of Airbus as leases expire.

Perhaps most importantly, the name of the merged airline. It is suggested that Alaska may stay because of its "heritage". No doubt this will be most important to folks here.

This would seem to be a merger that would make sense eventually. However, just because two companies seem to agree on what moves are best in the current marketplace doesn't mean that they should/would merge. Great minds might just be thinking alike. But merger down the road does make sense, perhaps 2020 or after.

Name wise, it would be a departure to keep a more regional, indeed almost local, name like "Alaska" (save for Southwest) rather than a more generic brand name that speaks to a national/global scope/marketplace. So I would expect "JetBlue" to remain the name of the merged airline.
