Aeroflot

Mon Feb 26, 2018 8:02 am

Hi everyone,

Just wondering if anyone has flown Aeroflot recently and could give their thoughts and opinions on the airline. Need to get from TLV to NRT and Aeroflot seems like the easiest and cheapest option.

Or if anyone could suggest a different airline for the same route. I guess CX to HKG and then onto NRT. Thanks in advance.

You really don't want to transfer at SVO. Compared to SVO, even CDG looks like a great airport for transfer.

Just out of curiosity, what exactly is your problem with SVO? I have connected there a couple of times and found it pretty seamless. It gets a bit annoying if you get a bus gate because the bus ride is endless, but we’re all Avgeeks so see it as a nice tour over the airfield. You’ll get to see plenty of Russian aircraft ;)

Airline is solid enough.
Transfer in Russia is alot easier than it was, but a visa is a hassle to get if the transfer is over 24 hours.

Never had a problem connecting at SVO. Have flown SU a few times in the distant past (313 and IL9 in Y) and more recently in J (77W). I'd happily fly them.

I've seen huge queues at SVO passport control; these can be skipped if you're a ST E+.... ;) Otherwise, not much of a problem @ SVO. The airport is decent.

The airline is solid IMO. Except they change plane type a lot.

I flew HKG-SVO-LHR with them in May 2016 and found it worthwhile, but with caveats - the most significant of which is that the HKG-SVO sector was in W ("Comfort Class") on the 77W. That was brilliant - a lot closer to Business than Economy - but my stroll through the Y cabin did leave me thinking it looked a bit cramped.

Transfer at SVO was by no means excellent but not unbearable either. Terminal F is pretty basic (but amusingly retro for the first little while), while D doesn't offer much in the way of space. Most retailers I saw accepted Euros and US Dollars.

The SVO-LHR leg was on an A333 but to be honest I fell asleep within minutes of getting aboard. Legroom wasn't the best though.

In short - if it's fantastically cheap, or you can get at least one of the sectors each way in W, go for it. If the price gap starts to narrow on more "conventional" carriers though, you'll probably only want to keep SU in the competition if you're feeling adventurous.

I'm based in Moscow and I adore Moscow. But never transited there. SU gives a good service, not amazing, but similar to most of European airlines... If the price fits you, just do it..

Aeroflot is a wonderful airline for long haul flights. The seats are comfortable, in-flight movie selection is good, and the food is nice by coach standards. If you have the means, upgrade to Comfort Class. It's a wonderful upgrade for a long flight.

They are a fantastic airline, with comfy seats hot meals, and an inflight magazine the size of a telephone directory (plenty to read!). SVO has always been a breeze for me to transit through. Just one quick security check, and MUCH faster than CDG or LHR in my opinion.

SU used be good for Y passenger comfort, when their Il-96-300 flew. Never since I had experienced such a large seat pitch; and in general -- passenger space, in Y.
Alas,.those days are long gone.

I haven't flown with post Soviet Aeroflot (only on Rossiya with SU-flight number), but my parents and my sister had them a few times, even with transfer in SVO and they were pretty happy with them.

If he is Israeli (since he/she is flying out of TLV), he doesn't need a Visa for Russia.
