Airports with most 747 service

Mon Feb 26, 2018 9:02 pm

I have compiled this list. I needed some standard way of measuring this, so I took an airport's peak 747 frequency for a single day during its peak season. If it's loaded at any point in the year, I have included it. For example, all 7X BA JFK-LHR are from the same day, and during peak season.

1. JFK- 10X

BA: 7X JFK-LHR
CA: 1X JFK-PEK
LY: 1X JFK-TLV
QF: 1X JFK-LAX

2. MCO- 7X

VS: 2X MCO-LGW
VS: 2X MCO-MAN
VS: 1X MCO-GLA
VS: 1X MCO-BFS
LH: 1X MCO-FRA

3. ORD-SFO- 3X

ORD:

BA: 1X ORD-LHR
LH: 1X ORD-FRA
KL: 1X ORD-AMS

SFO:

KE: 1X SFO-ICN
CA: 1X SFO-PEK
QF: 1X SFO-SYD

4. BOS-LAS-DEN-LAX-SEA- 2X

BOS:

BA: 1X BOS-LHR
LH: 1X BOS-FRA

LAS:

BA: 1X LAS-LHR
VS: 1X LAS-LGW

DEN:

BA: 1X DEN-LHR
LH: 1X DEN-FRA

LAX:

QF: 1X LAX-BNE
KL: 1X LAX-AMS

SEA:

BA: 1X SEA-LHR
LH: 1X SEA-FRA

5. EWR-PHL-IAD-DFW-IAH-AUS-PHX-SAN- 1X

EWR:

LH: 1X EWR-FRA

PHL:

BA: 1X PHL-LHR

IAD:

LH: 1X IAD-FRA

DFW:

BA: 1X DFW-LHR

IAH:

KL: 1X IAH-AMS

AUS:

BA: 1X AUS-LHR

PHX:

BA: 1X PHX-LHR

SAN:

BA: 1X SAN-LHR

So, are you talking about which UNITED STATES AIRPORTS see the most 747's? Because, based upon your thread title, it can be assumed that you're asking about WORLDWIDE.

If it's the latter, than probably a 2-horse race between LHR, FRA with SYD/ICN coming behind.

It took a while to make this list. I had to start somewhere, but feel free to add frequencies for other airports. I'll try to get to that later when I have some more time.

This is all in the USA, and since no US-based airline flies the 747 anymore they're all foreign. When adding foreign airports to the list (where 747s are based), you get a whole different picture. For example Lufthansa has a large 747-fleet, so I can imagine Frankfurt sees more 747s than any airport in the USA.

Yes, I would guess it's between FRA and LHR in the whole world.

For SFO the only two B747 operators (Pax) that is pretty much year round now is QF 1x SFO-SYD and CA 1x SFO-PEK. KE and BA will switch between the B747 and B777. Currently (Feb18) the BA flight is a B744 while the KE flight is a B77W. So SFO bounces between 2-4 B744/B748 ops throughout the year now.

So worldwide I reckon FRA or LHR is the largest operator of the 747.
A300, A318, A319, A320, A321, A330, A340, A350, A380, B737, B747, B757, B767, B777, B787, E190

BOS sometimes sees 2 744's(today, for example) from BA, as well as the 748 from LH. So I would say it's peak is 3/daily. Great list though!
Airports: BOS, JAX, JFK, EWR, LGA, CVG, ATL, CLT, DCA, IAD, STT, PVD, ALB, MCO
Aircraft: 733, 735, 73G, 738, 752, 717, A319, A320, MD-88, E190, E175, E145, CRJ-200, CRJ-700, Q400
Airlines: B6, CO, DL, US, NW, WN, DH
...a good start but a looong way to go!

I counted somewhere around 35 747 arrivals into ANC yesterday (Sunday 25-Feb) That's got to be at, or near the top. OP didn't specify pax only.

That is a valid point actually...

I admit I did not think of that one, but you're definitely right.

PAX wise isn't LHR just BA now?
Amazing how it was once a B747 haven, a lovely mix of SP/200/300 and 400s!

The odd chip in from Virgin on occasion and KE with the 8i.

Yeah years ago now: BA, VS, UA, MH, QF, NZ, IK, Canadian etc etc....

I doubt it considering that the only other airlines that fly to JFK that have 744's are KL, KE, and VS, none of which have operated the 747 to JFK with any sort of frequency as of late. LH and BA are the exception rather than the norm and probably the only ones that fluctuate with a 747. BA in particular dramatically cuts capacity in the low season with only a single 747 vs 7 in the high season, so LH is much steadier throughout the year with the A380 during the high season and 748 during the low season. When measured by peak annual frequencies, JFK is only the highest during the absolute peak. MCO is much steadier throughout the year with only 1 or 2 frequencies cut during the low season, and is actually equal to or higher than JFK for the majority of the year.

I would agree, the whole of the serviceable BA747 fleet will depart/arrive LHR at least once in a 36 hour period.

And MCO can actually have 6 at one time, as pictured below.

I would have guessed LAX has way more than two. OZ ICN-LAX is missing and so is SFO-ICN. The same airplane is also flown LAX-SFO.

You are also missing QF LAX-JFK.

Yup, I think LH runs 747-8i on FRA-JFK.
KE at times (seasonal?) uses their 747-8i also on one of two JFK-ICN frequencies.

Just another perk for us Orlando locals. Nothing says you're home like a lineup of glistening 747's. :D

I love how all of them are on the ground at the same time, it's an incredible sight to see all 6 VS 747's parked wingtip to wingtip. I took this picture after arriving back home in MCO after my last flight.

As for LAS, that also depends on the day of the week or time of the year. BA operates multiple 744 flights on several days of the week and in the summer, there are certain days that VS operates 3x 744s to LAS. So, the 2x per day is the low side and 5x per day is the high side.

BA flies a380’s to MIA, it’s a huge route for British leisure travelers, along with the expected business pax. Much of AUS’s upgrade to 744 had to do with the very profitable cargo, of which the 744 has much more capability than the 788.

I am not even sure where or how to find the statistics, but I am sure that based on single-day, peak-season count, Jeddah during Hajj will have a significant number of 747's flying in (special pilgrim flights) though it's possible that these days there aren't that many (I remember seeing at least six 747's landing in JED on a single day in 2014).

British Airways don't fly multiple times a day from LHR to LAS let alone with the B747, they fly upto 14 weekly flights with upto 10 of those flights on the B747, plus the resumption of LGW to LAS which will three weekly B772.

VS have stopped flights to LAS from BFS and GLA so I should imagine that there will be upto two daily B744 into LAS for summer 2018 from both LGW and MAN.

Even if your figure of 5 or 6 daily B747 is correct it's still not a very high number when you take other airports such as ANC, FRA and LHR into consideration.

Jfk probably has more than that. LH had a 748 there when I was there a few weeks ago.

I doubt it considering that the only other airlines that fly to JFK that have 744's are KL, KE, and VS, none of which have operated the 747 to JFK with any sort of frequency as of late..

Just last week KE operated the 748 into JFK every single day of the week.
You can't just look at a single day and conclude these are the airlines that operate 747's.
In BOS for example in the Summer 3 out of 4 BA departures will likely be a 744, if past summers are any indication.
