Paid lounge at FRA traveling to the USA

Fri Aug 10, 2018 3:50 pm

Hello everyone,

Next month I am traveling to Tampa, with a long layover at FRA. I was checking what my options are to pay for a lounge (traveling in Economy), but before I book anything I wanted to make sure, I will be actually able to access the lounge as I am not sure which gates flights to Tampa usually use. Guess it is Terminal 1, but are all lounges in that terminal accessible for USA bound flights?

I also have a Diners Club card, not sure if that can help at all... any advice as to which lounge I would be able to use is greatly appreciated!

Thanks! I will check this out.

But I am willing to pay for any lounge, even if it is not Diners. Just want to make sure I can use it before the flight and I will not need to go through security after leaving it (this way I can stay there up to the boarding time without having to worry about it).

AFAIK, the only lounge with paid access is landside in Terminal 1 - making crossing the security necessary!

But T1 is offering a nice Transit Hotel - maybe an alternative for you?! https://www.frankfurt-airport.com/en/tr ... hotel.html

If you want to have lounge access after security [and passport control] you need to double check that the lounge you select is in the non-schengen area of the airport.

Well, first things first then. What airline do you arrive with? What airline do you depart (to Tampa) with?
This will determine your terminal (1 or 2) situation, and then you can work from there.

I am flying Lufthansa (both flights). It looks like this site:

https://www.loungebuddy.com/FRA

Offers booking for lounges in Concourses B and C of Terminal 1... But I am not sure which concourse the flight will depart from. Is there security in between the two concourses?

Thanks,

George

AFAIR, there was security check between A and Z, but not between B and C.

Regardless... Anyway, all flights to the USA undergo a specific security check (TSA?), and large airports find it convenient to dedicate a section (a few gates) permanently to these flights. Check FRA real-time departure board for US-bound flights and look for patterns; also, check the airport map (sometimes they explicitly say which gates US-bound flights depart from).
This will narrow down your target area.

Also, if your layover is really long, I'd consider heading into the city. S-bahn is taking you downtown from the regional station -- and this is basically under Terminal 1.

If you just want a shower, the FRA airport operates showers in the B concourse for a small fee, something like 5 euros, can't remember. It's not luxurious, but you get a private locked room to change and shower in, and you are provided soap, shampoo and a towel. I've used it a few times when I have a 3+ connection and nothing better to do. I least I feel freshened up. All LH flights to the USA will use the Z gates, which utilize a secondary security screening process. I'd stay out of that area as long as you can unless you really enjoy shopping at the duty free store. THere's not much else down there.

US bound flights usually leave from concourses Z and C.
Z is basically just the second floor of A while C is quite far away.
Continental Schengen-flights arrive at A, non-Schengen at B.

From A you can go to B, C and Z with passport control only (usually no additional security control).

But it's not that easy the other way. I have to be honest. I wasn't able to figure it out exactly so far but to me it seems like leaving Schengen means no additional security control, but entering Schengen means that there is an additional security control.

There is also a new airside skytrain connection between A/Z and C but I haven't used it so far.
Happy Landings

Thank you everyone for your feedback! I will look into the options to visit the city or use a shower... May be finding a nice restaurant and stay out of the secondary screening area a bit longer will do the trick to kill some time and get some work done, instead of seeking a lounge. I also will book the FRA airport tour.

Happy travels!
