Countries with only an LCC based in their country

Fri Nov 09, 2018 10:30 am

Question in the title: are there countries where there isn't a national full service carrier and only a LCC that solely operates out of that country?

Great Britain with the service demise British Airways is going that way....

All kidding aside, there are some airlines with LCC-style intra-europe service only, in that categorie you can say:
Dublin (with Aer Lingus intra Europe)
Malta (Air Malta)
Latvia, Lithuania (Air Baltic)

Hungary is probably the best example in your line of questioning. No national carier and Wizziar is king there.

Iceland has Icelandair and WOW Air, both could be considered LCCs although Icelandair is more of a hybrid carrier. They're inbetween a legacy and an LCC.

Same is the case in Ireland. Ryanair is a true LCC, Aer Lingus is a hybrid carrier.

Slovakia is one of the few countries entirely without an airline, all airlines serving the country are foreign. However with Ryanair being the largest airline in Bratislava you could say it qualifies.

You could say Wizz Air is Hungary's national carrier. Wizz Air is a Hungarian carrier and is HQed in Budapest. W6 also collaborates closely with BUD and the Hungarian government developing new routes. For instance the former Yugoslavia network expansion they made a couple of years ago:

True, but Wizzair doesn't present itself as the Hungarian flag carrier. Ever since Malev went bust, Hungary didn't have a flag carrier anymore.

There is a large difference between being the largest airline in a country and being the flag carrier. Look at Ireland, where Aer Lingus is the true flag carrier of Ireland despite the fact that Ryanair is the bigger airline. But it's Aer Lingus that really associates itself with Ireland while Ryanair is international. Ask the Irish which airline is their national airline and they'll all say Aer Lingus.

Anyway, Wizzair is definitely a LCC and therefor qualifies for Hungary.
