El AL Planes Chsed At JFK

Fri Sep 12, 2003 10:26 am

A colleague recently told me that since September 2001, all El Al flights that leaves JFK are escorted to the runway by an armored vehicle. SUpposedly, this vehicle floolws the plane to the runway...

and once the plane aligns and begins its takeoff roll, the armored car literally chases it while it takes off. Are there any photos of that?

I dont know about armored cars, but when I was at EWR one day watching departures a EL AL pick up truck parked right next to me.

He stayed there and talked on his radio untill the El Al jet departed, then he left.

It was not an armored car, and it was just one guy who didn't look to intimidating. He just sat there and watched the aircraft untill it left, all the while talking on a radio, he didn't seem to be concerned with me.

I wasn't out of my car, and neither was he.

In these 2 pictures (both taken before 2001) you can see the German armored vehicle that escorts El Al planes on the ramp. One of these is from Frankfurt, and the other from Munich. I don't know if the same thing is done in New York. I know I have seen a picture of a plane being escorted in germany where the photgrapher made a specific comment about it, but I can't find it now.

I guess this is normal for El Al and all American airlines at Zurich-

With what is known about the attitude towards security of El Al, I think you can assume that this is done for their planes at JFK as well.

I have no idea about armor cars were followed with these planes on an El Al. It was get strictly security reason for El Al and it will get any of kind tight security. I wondered about what is going on for LY. I am planned going to Israel for next year of May 2004. Thanks!  Smile

i doubt that any armored vechicle could keep up with a plane on takeoff. even a humvee can't and thats about the fastest vechicle in the army's arsenal. maybe a police cruiser could, but that too is doubtful.

I agree.
Besides all depends on the layout of the runways and the taxiways, plus special permission to be present on these.

Here in Amsterdam El Al cargo 747s were escorted by an armoured vehicle even before the (1993?) crash. So it's nothing new. But, funnily enough, I haven't seen this happening in recent years.

Both times I have flown El Al out of JFK (1995 and 1998) we have had an escort from an armored vehicle. However when I flew them out of DTW, I do not recall seeing this.

I'd love to see the vehichle try to stay on the runway if it was following a 747 down the runway with engines at full thrust.

The armored vehicle in JFK that is being refered is the Port Authoritys. It is available on request. It's not a tank but some sort of vehicle that can even go in the water. I just call it the " urban assault vehicle"

Would a car really be able to chase a 747 up a rwy? Would it not be blown off by the wake?

Anyway, what could it do to protect the airliner?

I used work @ JFK during my summer breaks from college in the 80's and worked for Allied (now Allied-Ogden) as a ramper and there was always a contingent of security vehicles around ELAL flts. There were no armored cars but they had their own security force which used Chevy Caprice station wagons and yes they would 'escort' the a/c all the way to the runways and try as they might, drive as fast as they could while the a/c was on it's t/o roll. I vividly remember one night when I was taking a couple of pallets of cargo from one of their pax flt to the cargo area and since it was late and I wanted to go home, I called myself leaving the roadway and taking a shortcut across the ramp since it was virtually empty and the security car following me sped around and cut me off. Two of their 'guards' jumped out of the car and asked me where I was going and I told them that I was taking a short cut and they told me to get back on the road immediately!!! Every time we worked those flts, it was all business, no joking around. They would consantly check our id's and made sure we didn't pack bags/cargo that would block the cameras in the belly. Who would have thought that 2 decades ago they were ensuring that what happened on Sept 11, 2001 would never happen to their airline. ELAL should be considered the "Undisputed Kings" of airline security bar none.

I failed to mention that the security 'chase cars' were not on the runway while the a/c were taking off, but on the taxiways.

I can't imagine anyone thinking that having an armored car chase an ElAl 747 down a runway is really going to stop something from happening, if indeed something is going to happen.

here at MIA a jeep or a van with dark tints follows the plane on taxi and stays around until the plane takes off. It will usually (idiotically) stop next to the spotters on the other side of the fence until the "danger" has passed

in one occation, one of the photographers here who works for the police, wasn't wearing his uniform or police t-shirt and one of the guys on the vehicle flashed a gun at him while he was near the fence with his camera.

Last time I was photographing an EL AL aircraft i was in my car and waited until the vehicle passed, as soon as I got near the fence it made a U turn and came back and parked next to me, but he knew better not to block my view  Big grin

ELAL should be considered the "Undisputed Kings" of airline security bar none.

they are, and thier security is why no person has ben able to sucesfully hijack an EL AL plane. only one person attempted, but was subdued very quickly by air marshals. just so you know, she was about 5' tall and weighed no more than 150lbs.
