I only flew once in a A340-300, it was HB-JMC from SWISS and it was a flight from LAX to ZRH. The model was the 313X and it looked quite reasonable. But after flying from ZRH to LAX in a SWISS MD11 ( HB-IWM ) I must say that the Airbus lacks a lot of power! But it was a nice and smooth flight!

The 500 is the real best 340 performer : the 600 is only a streched version with best economics on route on which the 500 isn't needed.

well it doesnt give you a great frill on takeoff but, as you say it was a nice and smooth flight and is still a perfectly safe aircraft. Maybe you should try the 500.

Actually, if you look at the entire A330/340 family, the A330-200 has emerged as the best of the bunch as far as versatility, economics, and performance.

To your original question, its really hard to compare as the A342/343, A345 and A346 are designed for different missions, even if all part of the same family. Airlines preferred the A343 over the A342 since most airlines wanted the extra 28 seats and cargo space available in the A343 over the longer range of the A342. The improved A343X more or less makes the A342 obsolete. The A345 is a niche aircraft, optimized and designed for ultra-long range has allowed airlines to open new routes, but it is unlikely to be a huge seller for Airbus as not many airlines require such a long-range aircraft - but it seems to be a success. The A346 is all about capacity, its very big and has enough range to most long-range routes offered by airlines; there have been rumors (I stress rumors) that some airlines are not 100% satisfied with the subtype as it is missing some performance targets, but all new aircraft have some issues upon introdcution and Airbus will solve these problems quickly.

I guess there is no good answer to your question.

In general I like the 340-500 best, because it combines a not too long fuselage with these fancy big powerplants!

For a particular one I definitely go for the EK345 as well. Just stunning...

I flew with Virgin on A340-600 LHR-IAD in 2003, and back from
LAX-LHR on Virgin A340-300.
From my point of view I thought the -600 was excellent.
That might just have been the way Virgin have fitted them out, but the huge PTV's and the large modern loo's and cabin fittings were brilliant. Very clean and brand new.
Their -300 was alright. Would have preferred to have used their B747-400
flight for the return, but the -300 was still on a power if not better than the
alternatives, except perhaps BA.

I think the 346 is not very well rated, many airlines as IB seemed to have troubles with it.
345 is made for the super long range market, a niche.

So I think for sales, flexibility and reliability, the 340300 is the best

The A345 looks best. Well proportioned with engines and fuselage. The -200 and -300 have such tiny engines...and A346 is for airlines with penis envy *cough*Virgin - "Mine's Bigger than Yours"*cough*. Much too long.
