So how bout it?...What takeoff did you see that had you questioning whether the plane would end up in the air, or end up all over the evening newscast??
For me there were a few of them, but the most memorable was last summer in ATL. It was a hot Saturday morning with no wind and an east departure flow. Sitting in one of the parking lots of the Tradeport just east of the 9L dep. end. The takeoffs were pretty stale with the runway being as long as it is, when suddenly I saw the most captivating thing...A DL MD-11 hauling "you know what" down the runway heading straight for me (DL #55, to NRT). Actually, I could only see the #2 engine due to slope of the runway, but it sounded like 1000 freight trains running at full power and it's speed was incredible!
My view of the runway end was blocked by a grove of trees, and because the jet ran all the way to the end I never saw it leave the ground, but the noise was heart-pounding. It kept getting louder and louder but I still couldn't see it when suddenly, like a jack-in-the-box, it popped up over the trees, landing gear just retracting. It plowed right over my head (and the considerably taller building behind me!!), with a quick screaming blast from the engines, and within two seconds it was gone...Pushing off to the east and leaving behind a thundering roar, AND a strong a wake vortex!! Never before have I felt wake turbulence from a DEPARTING jet!
