RTW 3 Stopovers In New Zealand - Advise?

Thu May 27, 2004 8:37 pm

There is a very good possibility that I will be on a round the world trip in January. My itinerary will possibly look like this: Start at AMS via LHR-HKG-SIN-SYD/BNE to New Zealand and go island hopping in the pacific to LAX and go back to AMS via LHR.

There are only 3 stopovers permitted in New Zealand with NZ.

I must travel via Auckland to the pacific so that leaves only 2 other stopovers. I'd like to do one segment with a prop.
Now my question is:

What are the must see's, which regions and special/nice/exciting airports should I visit? Doesn't matter if the 'prop segment' is not included. Is spotting allowed in New Zealand?

Kind regards,
Sander

I would suggest that you visit Queenstown and Christchurch on the South Island. I go back there time and again, because it's so beautiful and there are so many things to do.

Queenstown has a small airport. Mostly props and 737's there. Christchurch has a fair-sized airport with a very nice open-air viewing deck, situated on top of the domestic terminal.

In Christchurch you will see an assortment of props, 737's, 767's and also 747's. I haven't been to CHC since NZ got their Airbuses. There is also an assortment of planes flying to Antarctica, as the International Antarctic Centre is located next to the airport.

Fly directly from SYD to ZQN (2x direct flights a week) on flight NZ232. From ZQN you can go on to CHC on one of various ATR72 operated flights. From CHC you fly directly to AKL. You even may be in luck and get on a 744 (NZ098 & 090 from CHC-AKL).

Enjoy the trip!!

On my RTW trip, 4 years ago, I spent 1 month in New Zealand and I have to say that from the cities I liked CHC the most.

Try and fly into CHC - would be a shame to miss the stunning drive from CHC to Queenstown. Fly out of Queenstown.

Or do it the other way round - I would imagine a landing in Queenstown would be spectacular!

Spent far too little time in NZ. The north island was nice, but the south - OMG. Just amazing. Queenstown is touristy, but huge amounts of fun. CHC has a nice feel to it. I would imagine that would be quite good for spotting too, as you will see some widebodies, and the US Antarctic Research Centre is there so you will see some military 757's and Orions (I am crap at military!)

I would also suggest flying to BNE and out of SYD, CBA or even MEL. Shame to miss so much by flying over it, as much fun as flying is!

Must sees - for me Mount Cook and Milford Sound. Worth a long drive from QTown, absolutely INCREDIBLE. Just stunning. Otago region is meant to be really nice too, but never got there. Also drive the Arthurs Pass from Christchurch to Greymouth, or take the TranzAlpine train. Again, just amazing. Didn't see Frodo or Sam, but met a few orks!  Big grin

In the north, Rotorua is interesting. A thermal village - bit smelly, and touristy, but probably worth seeing anyway. Bay of Islands / Whangarei was nice. Wasn't too impressed with AKL - I hear WLG is much nicer.

Whatever you do, double the amount of time you were thinking of staying there. My biggest regret! It may be much smaller than Australia, but there is so much to see and do, and as its very mountainous in parts, distances can be very deceptive.

Have fun - want to hear a trip report too on your return!

PS - Star Alliance ticket? Where after New Zealand?

PS - should this be in Aviation Polls etc? Sorry - just thought

Thanks for the replies!

No this RTW ticket is called The Great Escapade. I can only fly with VS, SQ, and NZ. Shame VS is not in Star. That would be good for the (my) miles.

Yes I know this isn't the right forum for this kind of threads but I still have to get used to the new forum lay out for this. I simply forgot, sorry.

Actually I was planning to do that but I know NZ flies a 744 out of BNE to AKL and that makes me want to fly to SYD and out of BNE. Or are there other Australian cities that are served by NZ 744.

I wasn't getting at you! Sorry.

So they do! The NZ136 - daily service I see! Had a look at the *A Electronic timetable - there is *A 744 service between Australia and New Zealand, but not on NZ.

I know the Great Escapade. Its a good fare, in fact, the cheapest RTW fare for sale from the UK. Great value, and if you are a *A FFP member, loads of miles coming your way.

Maybe try the other way then? Into MEL/SYD and out of BNE. If you rushed it, SYD - BNE drive is 2 days, but you could easily take a leisurely week doing it.

BTW, if memory serves me correct, having just looked at the Great Escapade website, the ticket has changed since I was last working as a travel agent. I am sure that Silk Air was on there too. Admittedly, not much of a loss, but still.

And after New Zealand? South Pacific? USA? Just got back from 6 months RTW and this talk is making me sick you lucky lucky b**tard!

Thanx Mark! Sorry for making you sick!  Big grin

My best friend is going to marry in January. His fiancee lives in Honk-Kong. So after the marriadge I'm going with them to Hong-Kong to celebrate again for her family and friends there. While they are going on a honeymoon from there I'm planning to continue my RTW trip from there.

Point is I have only 4 to 6 weeks time to finish my trip. (still have to negotiate with my employer) My goal is to make as many flights as possible while I have reserved about a week for the Australian coast between BNE and SYD (maybe MEL too), about 2 weeks for New Zealand and about a week for Tahiti. I hope to visit Bora Bora and Moorea. I will do a few days L.A. too if I have any time left.
Mmm I work for Menzies Aviation Group at AMS. Maybe I can get a transfer to SYD and AKL and can stay much longer.

I still have too look for a good FFP. Can I use miles I've earned with VS in a FFP from a Star Alliance member?

And Mark, do you know how I can purchase the Great Escapade ticket? At a travel agent?
Sorry to bother you with my 'makingyousick' plans.

Kind regards,
Sander

Nope.
NZ only serve BNE with 744s, the rest are served with 762s, 733s, 763s or 320s.

Are BNE, SYD and MEL served by 767s?

It seems as if BNE only gets the 744 at this stage.
MEL is served with the A320. SYD gets A320's and 767's.

And a bit besides the point: PER gets the 763.

Enjoy New Zealand!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Aviationfreak / Sander

Stopped being sick long enough to answer!  Big grin

You should be able to book your flights at any IATA registered high - street travel agent. A good idea would be to go in with the print out from the website - that way, you know exactly what you want, and can make sure that the travel agent is reserving it for you.

As for Virgin mileage credit to use on a Star Alliance carrier, you may redeem the for flights with:
NZ, ANA, BMI, SK and SQ
but not necessarily on all flights with all of those airlines.

Sounds like a lot of fun!
