Who Here Is Superstitious About Flying?

Tue Jun 01, 2004 4:52 pm

Sorry in advance if you find this to be a ridiculous post, but I was just wondering who has unique superstitions when it comes to flying and if so, would you mind sharing some of them with us?

I ask this because today, I had to look up airfares to possibly switch my flight for this coming weekend for one day earlier than scheduled. After a while, I noticed I still had another browser window open to www.airdisaster.com because I was reading up on the UA 232 accident in Iowa since it was being discussed in another topic and I decided to research it a bit. Luckily, I did not end up booking a flight, otherwise I might be somewhat scared now for simultaneously booking a ticket for this weekend and browsing airline accidents.  Sad

Yeah, yeah stupid, I know...but you do see the connection right? LOL I have been known to be superstitious, and I'm just curious if others are the same, or possibly worse then I am.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I am not certain if you would call it superstition, but whenever I am boarding, I touch the outside of the aircraft as I get on.

I don't know if I would call this superstitious but if I were to ever get a strong "feeling" about not taking a particular flight, I would have no qualms about paying the $100 fee to change tickets and take a different flight. I have a friend who was ticketed for AA flight 11 on 9/11/01. For reasons he still can't explain or understand to this date, he changed to an earlier flight.

Is it not a bit hard to avoid thouching the inside of a plane anyway....

Hey Eric. I think you misread the post. They said they touch the 'outside' of the aircraft. I hope they mean PRIOR to take off.

Damn.

too early in the morning. ah, no. the chances of something happening to you are way too small. if one really touches the outside of the plane should you not do that with your car as well, seeing the statistics says something is more likely to happen whilslt driving. or at home for that matter.

Yea I know it is stupid but even when I become a pilot I will still try to touch the outside of the plane. I dont do it every flight. Like the one I had last night on ATA MDW-FLL. Also every flight I count how many seats to the nearest emergency exit.

I always board aircrafts with positive thinking only, as flying has become so familiar to me. So many people (ground, air..)working to make me fly. And I want to trust they are doing only quality work. Why should I keep some evil black cat in my mind ? Thanks God that I feel so relax and cheerful every time I take a plane !!  Innocent

Cheers. Kilavoud.

Well, you could say i'm superstitious. Most if it is just fun. When i fly with my friends i always look for things to get them nervous. For instance, Jim is sitting in the 13th row, or there are 292 passengers on board.

I definitely touch any aircraft that I'm boarding. It's more like a pat and rub, accompanied by a whispered 'Hey there'. Pretty weird, I know.. At least it makes me feel comfortable..

For those of you who are superstitious and play the lottery... here's my story:

I'm going on vacation in two weeks. Yes, it includes a airline itinerary. See if you can guess the airline by this:

Every day for the last several months I have managed to wonder what time it is and look at my watch (or any digital clock) exactly at 7:17 AM and 7:17 PM...

Yesterday (Friday June 5th) I bought a Virginia Lottery Pick 3 ticket for the night draw. I won $80. The numbers were 7-1-7.

My car insurance bill was due a few weeks ago. The total premium for 2 cars for a year was exactly $717.00

So in two weeks, I'll be flying from PHF-CAK on, guess who?? That's right, AirTran 717s! [cue the Twilight Zone music]

Dunno if u call this supersitious..but when i was flying on an AA MD80 ona charter flight i taxied by a parked plane and the reg of it was N911TW. reffering to 9/11 atacks i said i will NEVER get on that plane!! well....friday, im getting ready to board my AA MD80 flight to DFW. I peer over the reg number and my eyes go wide..sitting there is N911TW. I was very hestitant for good reasons NOT to board the flight. i thought it may be a sign or a warning......well i didnt want to caus emy cousin trouble and family by missing the lfight and screwing up the plans so i boarded and prayed for a good flight and hoped it was just a weird coincedence...nataurlyl im alive sinc eim typing..

Flymia,

"....when I become a pilot I will still try to touch the outside of the plane..."

I think you would have to anyway for preflight }= ^ )>

I like to touch the outside of the plane and also glance through the crack to see the rest of the plane

It's so funny to read how many people touch the plane. I always have since I was very little and could walk on my own. Now, as I touch the top of the door frame I also peer between the crack in the Jetway so I can look at the rest of the a/c. When I touch the a/c I also like to look at all the rivets throughout the a/c. My dad also knocks twice on the outside as well.

Its just nice to know that IM not the only freak who touches the aircraft as I board. I have been doing it for as long I as I can remember, and don't intend on ever stopping, despite the fact that I am going to become a pilot in the near future. All the statistics in the world don't make me feel quite as good as that little pat that is really my way of saying, "I love you, and think its amazing what you do every day. You are truly a majestic creation, and IM lucky to be traveling with you." Odd yes, but Im not alone!

Good god, I'm so glad I looked at this thread...I really had believed that I was the only one who touched the outside of the plane as I'm boarding!!! I sort of give it a quick friendly slap, mainly so it just looks like I'm steadying myself rather than going through a ritual - I may be weird for doing it, but I don't want the F/A at the door to know that...she might be cute  Wink/being sarcastic
