Which Is The Most International Airport In The US?

Fri Jun 11, 2004 1:58 pm

I believe there is no other country with so many large International airports as the USA. Among all of them, which one would you say is the one with the most international flights?

JFK?

LAX?

MIA?

DFW?

ORD?

IAD?

IAH?

SFO?

I go for JFK...

My bet will be LAX. Almost every major carrier in the world flies into LAX.

It is always a toss up between MIA and JFK. Each handles about 15 million int'l passengers a year.

I would go with JFK on this one, with LAX coming in second.

I think it's IAD far and away, followed by Atlanta and possibly Detroit (Wayne County)

JFK has more international carriers than LAX... but we get more 747s (Pax wise only) and more 747s is better! But JFK does rock.. except when the cops hassle you!

Dear Tasha:

ATL and DTW are not as international as the other ones, though they have a lot of domestic flights.

JFK gets all of the Europeans and LAX gets all of the Asian carriers. It's between those two.

I think that MIA is actually the most international of the US airports. It may not have the same number of international carriers as JFK or LAX but in terms of the sheer numbers of flights to Central and South America and the Caribbean, plus many to Europe, flown by American and international carriers, the proportion of international flights to domestic there is far higher than the others. In large part it results from its relatively isolated position at the tip of Florida whereas JFK and LAX are more centrally located relative to other major cities. ATL does not enter this race at all.

It would be JFK hands down if that accursed Jersey dump known as EWR didn't have international service.

ACAfan has a pic of CO. I didn't know CO flew to JFK. Where does it fly from? I am also sure I glanced CO at LGA, was I mistaken?

In terms of INDIVIDUAL airlines, Scheduled, operated on own code:

JFK-59 Foreign Airlines
MIA-45 Foreign Airlines
LAX-44 Foreign Airlines

information subject to change, at the drop of a hat....

Stirling, thanks for the numbers. Is it asking to much for airports ranked 4-10?

Stirling,

What about individual US carriers that have International routes? Apart from code share.

JFK gets all of the Europeans and LAX gets all of the Asian carriers

Actually, you may be surprised to know that LAX is split straight down the center in terms of European nonstop service versus Asian.

For the most part, the Asian airlines that serve LAX serve JFK. Not all of the European carriers that serve JFK serve LAX.

JFK wins handsdown for most international airport. It is the LHR of the US.

It makes me happy that nobody has mentioned EWR yet!  Smile

WesternDC1010:

As for USA carriers, JFK is the airport from where Delta serves most of its European routes. And Delta is the USA airline serving the largest European network.

AA at DFW serves lots of destinations over Mexico and Central America. And from MIA covers all the Caribbean and South America.

UA from ORD, IAD and SFO does the international routes.

CO goes every where from EWR and IAH (sorry for the news, Ripieces.)

And by the way, EWR has a pretty big load of international carriers, plus a huge international routes system operated by CO.

Actually from MIA, AA covers all of South America, Central America, Mexico City, Cancun and come November a large portion of their European routes with the addition of Manchester, UK to the daily Madrid, Paris, London Heathrow service out of MIA and I hear FCO and Brussels might be on the way.

My bet would go to:

1. JFK
2. MIA
3. ORD
4. EWR
5. LAX
