Does Watching A/c Make You A Bad Driver?

Mon Jun 14, 2004 12:40 pm

I was driving by the airport today and noticed a couple a/c on final and was just watching them fly over the highway. Next thing I notice is that I was swerving all over my lane. As my girlfriend tells me I am a terrible driving when a plane is flying over. Does anyone else have these problems and any interesting stories about it, maybe accidents caused by it?

HaHa!! All the time. Especially when I'm driving on the NJ Turnpike by EWR. Don't even watch the road. My friends tell me I'm a bad driver because of it but i don't understand how you could pay attention to the cars when you have such amazing pieces of machinery landing and taking off right next to you.

This is so true! Just today I was driving back from a weekend in Long Island and we passed JFK - I saw 2 747's, 4 767's, and a handful of A320's while we were sitting in traffic on the Belt Parkway. I held-up traffic half the time and almost banged the car in front of me the other half. I stopped counting planes when my wife gave me a stern yelling.

Also, being in the truck lanes on the southbound turnpike near EWR is deadly as well...

Working at LAX, I must admit I pay more attention to the right side of the Westbound 105 Freeway after the 405 interchange than I do focusing on staying in my actual lane and watching out for the daily break-pushers trying to exit Sepulveda.

The worst part is that the LAX landing approach parallels the 105 nearly from the 605, so my entire drive on the 105 is constantly distracting as I look up at various AM flights coming in  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I don't think the cops would like my excuse very much should I ever cause an accident!

It's an entirely different kind of flying; all together.

Wow, I know where you're coming from. I drive the freeway under the approach to LAX every day, too and from work. It is very hard not to watch. Hey, back in the late 80's I used to watch a CV880 fly in every morning. Now, how am I supposed to NOT watch this?

See ya,

I told this story once, that while I was living in Miami, I was on the 836 and while watching a DL 777 in the Olympics color scheme at MIA, I accidently rear-ended my wife who I was following! Boy did I get an ear full. I almost did it again on the I-95 at EWR when the An-225 was there once a few years back. Although this time, my wife was with me and yelled at me to watch where I was going. No accident that time!

I hope not because I am definitely guilty of this too. Luckily it happens most often around Des Moines where the traffic is not bad, but I had to catch myself last week on I-405 when passing by SNA.

Absolutely - on the M25 near LHR, I'm hopeless ! When I worked at LHR, I'd sometimes drive round the M25 on my way places, and my car had a sunroof - I'd be watching planes through the sunroof rather than watching the road. Never had an accident, but still... not good.

I am a horrific driver if I am near an airport. I live near SNA but if I go home to see my parents I drive by SNA, LAX, and can see Van Nuys from the different freeways. If my girlfriend is with me she know to keep a lookout on the road and keep me focused on driving. Sometimes I let her drive just so I can catch all the scenery.

Totally Agree... Every day whilst driving to work (LHR) i have to drive along the peremiter Road over from T5. Well I nearly crash every day watching the damn things i work with flying over my head. One time i came into work and a Manager for BAA (a good friend i hasten to add) stopped me and told me that i drive very badly and whilst i was watching that BA 744 flying over my head earlier on, i nearly went into the Land Rover in front. Well i was rather embarrased that apart from nearly ending up in the drivers boot, someone else actually spotted me doing this..
But I cant help it  Sad

I don't have this problem, I take the bus. I say let someone else drive you around (especially near an airport). Big grin

Get a motorbike wear a SHOEI "Syncrotec" crash helmet, pop the front of the lid up leave the cars standing at the lights gives you plenty of time to watch em at the next red.

I trained my girls. In the car approaching Melbourne, Australia they would call out.
"Traffic 10 o'clock low possible 767 left to right". We had it down pat No accidents, with 3 spotters in the car.

How can anyone driving north on the 405 NOT look at those airliners passing right overhead as they head into SNA?

Me and a friend were out at DEN one day, he was behind me. We were going along the road along the 16s and it is very heavily used for trucks. All of a sudden an Alaskan 734 flies overhead, just perfect timing. I swerved to the right and thought a truck was side swiping me or something. I swerved more when I looked at what it was. Scared me badly!

Every time when accelerating, I want to pull the yoke towards me... and then I remember, it's a Skoda, not a Boeing...  Sad

Yeah, I've had a couple of scary moments. Once when a Finnair MD80 was making a rather strange very low approach just over my head, I almost went off the runw... the road I mean. Now I drive extra carefully when near the airport.

Gerry, you inspire me! Know that I will use your proven method of cross driving/spotting in my future child rearing practices!

Oh, and yes, my Girlfriend thinks Im a horrible drive near any airport. She especially love it when we are having a conversation, and mid sentence (her's or mine) I cease all attempts of communication to enjoy the beauty of commercial aviation. The insult coupled with a few close calls gets me in trouble a lot!!!

Guilty as well, especially past EWR on the NJ Turnpike...definitely hard to stay focused there...I was also driving past JFK on the Belt Parkway yesterday, but that is like a parking lot with all that traffic so the danger was very low...saw a Song 757, CX Cargo 744F, and Gemini MD-11F as we crawled past...

I just drove from the PHL area to ACY where I'm typing this and I almost crashed twice watching planes, once near PHL and the Betsy Ross Bridge and the other was a Navy G-V landing runway 13 at ACY. At least the F-16s are in the pattern here today; I guess I'll just sit here and watch them from the hangar!

Gerry, that's the best! I will begin the proper aircraft identification lessons, to my two kids, soon!

I have to go near TPA, almost anytime I get in the car, so it's plenty of fun riding w/me!

See... all you guys have problems with just one line of air traffic to watch. Everytime I'm driving north on I-5 into downtown Seattle, I get horribly distracted by flights coming into/leaving both BFI and SEA! I'm telling you, with the approaches so low to the freeway, it can be a real danger!  Big thumbs up

OH hell yes.
Driving on the 427 or the 401 here in Toronto is really bad for me. You can see the entire runway and most of the airport on both of these highways at certain points. I have had a few close calls when they are coming in for alanding.

No one wants to be anywhere near me when driving through southern Atlanta in the I-75, I-85 area, and parts of the perimeter as well. I am just plain scary! I am sure I would be the exact same way if I ever had to drive near ORD. Fortunately all of my Chicago experiences involved a cab, limo, or train.  Smile

We've got about 20 a.netters coming in from all over the country in 2 weeks.. wouldn't it be a tragedy if we collectively stopped paying attention to our driving on I-5 and caused a massive pile-up? A.net would be in mourning for 20 of it's brothers & sisters lost to the divine cause of spotting! LOL.  Big grin Big grin

The San Mateo bridge, Westbound towards the 101!
The heavies on final into SFO coming in from the south. Especially fun between about 1030 and 1600 when the Euros and Asians come a calling!
People who know, know not to travel on this bridge with me! It is a little better now since the East span has been widened to 3 lanes each direction. Before, with me with eyes on the planes, the Bay below, and cars trying to get around me, made for an always interesting trip.
On a side note, anyone remember the Limo-staging area at SFO? Great place to spot, only to be closed now for security issues. To get a photo-shot without the fence in the way, all one had to do would be to stand on their car! (Blanket in the boot was solely for this purpose, wouldn't want to scratch the paint mind you!)
It was great fun in the old days when the DC-8s, 727s, 707s would take off, LOUD is better! I'm sure the folks in Millbrae would beg to differ!!! But, I for one could think of nothing better than having the ground shake from the thrust of an old American 707 heading to DFW!!!! Besides, they were easier to follow off into the horizon! Kinda like low-level contrails.
OK, I have said enough, NEXT!

Definately! Sometimes when I'm driving by LHR on the M25 I'm not sure how I passed the last 5 miles without hitting anything! It's better because of variable speed limits, so often you're down to 40mph, but even then I've had some close calls! Especially when they're coming in on 09, nice and slow.

Happend quite a few time when driving to ZRH.... in the early morning, all the heavies were coming in over the highway. In stunning light conditions, no chance for not looking up  Insane
