Planes, Trains And Automobiles

Mon Jun 14, 2004 10:17 am

A couple of nights ago, flew through Las Vegas en route to JFK, with TPA being my next destination. All of these airports feature trains for connections between terminals, or to reach the terminals. Made me think about what other airports use trains, or light rail, not for connections to their cities but rather for purely airport related transportation. I can think of the following:

Seattle/Tacoma
San Francisco
Las Vegas
Denver
Dallas/Ft. Worth
Houston-Intercontinental
Detroit
Chicago-O'Hare
Atlanta
Orlando
Tampa/St. Petersburg
Miami
New York-JFK
Newark
Pittsburgh

not sure about Cincinatti....

any others?

Cincinnati has a train in terminal 3. I was at CVG back in December.

MSP has a brand new tram on the Green Concourse. It was supposed to open 2 years ago, but there were problems with testing that delayed its opening.

People movers, trams, and the like make a ton of sense for airports. With trams that run between terminals and parking lots it frees up a ton of space on the road system that shuttle buses would normally take up.

At LHR the Heathrow Express can be used to get between Terminals 1,2,3 and 4, and when it opens Terminal 5.

LHR - In addition to the Heathrow Express, the London Underground Piccadilly Line serves the Terminals 1-3 station and Terminal 4 station, and can be used to travel between the two.

STN - has an automated rapid transit system to carry passengers between the main terminal and two of the satellites.

BHX - features an automated light rail system carrying people between the passenger terminal and Birmingham International rail station and the NEC.
