Replacement For Fedex's 727s?

Mon Jun 21, 2004 2:49 pm

What will FDX replace it's battle-scarred 727's with? MD-80s, 757s, A320s?...what do you think? Might they go with something new all together, possibly (GULP!) the 737??

757's seem like a nice replacement and would give FedEx some extra legs on some of their routes. A320's? By the way, has Airbus contemplated the idea of introducing a Freighter variant for the 320's or maybe a company that could introduce freighter doors to be retrofitted for these aircraft? Would be interesting.

I think A320s would be most likely modified to carry freight, but they're still pretty young, so any modifications wouldn't come for another 5-10 years I guess.

Pw4460,
not all freighters have to be old aircraft.

I'm sure if FedEx really pushed the issue, they could get Airbus to create a freighter variant for the A320 family...though I only see the A320 as the only family member having feasability to be efficient in the market.

With a number of 737 Classics coming onto the used market, more than likely FedEx will probably replace the 727s with cargo conversions of the 737-300/400. As for the 757, too big for many of the markets they currently fly the 727s on. MD-80, too narrow to fit cans into on the main deck; maybe ABX Air will replace their DC-9s with MD-80s.

The conversion of 757's have already started, and the cost is about $5m give or take.
Whether they are right for some of the 727 routes, only time will tell. Certainly they will have a significant capacity, the question is, do Fed Ex see enough growth on those routes to warrant the upgrade?
