Your First Impression Of The A340 When Launched

Sat Jun 26, 2004 12:19 am

In 1993, when I was living in Spain, my mom knew I had developed an interest for aviation and she had bought me Antonio Lopez Ortega's book "Reactores Comerciales" (Commercial jetliners). I read all the descriptions of the aircraft listed and often memorized the exact wording in the book. I remember reading about the newly designed and launched Airbus A340 (which was then labeled the "World Ranger" at the Paris Le Bourguet Airshow, as it had operated a flight from Le Bourguet-Auckland, New Zealand, nonstop). I remember thinking as a little boy, "wow, what an amazing feat of ingenuity and design and also what a beautiful aircraft it was." I also couldn't wait to fly on one, since Iberia had placed an order for 8 A340's to retire the hard working fleet of 8 DC-10's.

For all those that could remember reading something about the launch, planning or anything relating to the aircraft between its planning stages and launch, what were your impressions, expectations, and/or thoughts on the A340?

"how disproportionate and old style ugly thing" Actually the first time I ever saw it was in 1993 in SCL (under the colors of AF). I hadn't heard of an A340 at the time yet. I thought: "what is this?, it can't be a 707; it has winglets"

The first 4 engine a/c since the 747... I don't know, I had in my mind the idea that for a four we wanted a more impressive thing.

I still think there is something with the wrong proportion there: I don't know if the windows are too high (as in the 707), the wings are too narrow or too long, not sure, there's something that I can't totally like yet.

Although now I think despite the above it looks pretty nice!

"Oh, great, another DC-8"

Relax, people, I was an ignorant 11-year old at the time  Insane

Cheers!

Well, I cannot come up with a quote anymore - I know I liked it, though... I bought the A340-Multimedia-CD that was offered by "Flug Revue" back then - unfortunately, the computer I had back then was barely able to handle running that CD...

Nevertheless - one of my first thoughts about it was "I want to fly on that as soon as possible"... took me until 30/07/1997 (OS from VIE to JNB on OE-LAK, named "Africa"), but I have flown it 10 times since my first A340 flight back then, and it's still my favorite longhauler.

Leskova,
Have you had a chance to fly on either the -500 or -600? Just curious as to what your opinion of either new models are in comparison with the -200/0300.

767-322ER, no, unfortunately they've evaded me so far...

I'm trying to get to South Africa as soon as my bank account can aford it, and I'd be flying SAA's A346 on that route - but a few people I know that have flown on both preferred the A346 to the A343, saying that it was even quieter (which I find a bit difficult to believe, but then again, I haven't been on one yet).

So, sorry - I'm not able to make the comparison yet...

Regards,
Frank

I'm hoping to have the chance to go to Spain (my popular route every year) and maybe I can hop on IB A346's. South African flies to SA - Georgia">ATL with the A346, but am in the same predicament as you my friend and I think by the time that my wallet gets a little more weight, it'll be too late since SA is going to pull out of SA - Georgia">ATL.  Sad

I liked the looks of it since the first time I saw some sketches back in 1986 or 1987.
It was an advanced project by then (the same thing the 7E7 is now) and it´s temporary designation was "TA-11".

It was interesting to think about a European long haul airliner.

I have flown on it about 10 times since it was introduced and I like it a lot, but I still prefer the mighty B747...it's like a flying boat.
¡¡VIVA ESPAÑA!!

I saw it for the first time in the fall of 1998 in my German textbook. "That ain't no 747" was the first thing I said to myself. Took a while before a knew what it was.

"Wow, that's got to be a very powerful aircraft!" (Unfortunately I was wrong...)

I still love the 340's, especially the -500... the proportions are just perfect on this bird!
