EL Al Or Continental To Israel From DCA

Thu Jul 08, 2004 5:55 am

I am travelling from DCA to Tel Aviv.

My options based on price, comfort, and airplane interest are:

Delta Connection to JFK to connect with El Al (not sure if the El Al flight would be 747-400 or 777). Big Disadvantage, going through JFK.

Continental connecting through EWR (ERJ to 777-200ER)

I am going coach. Part of me wants to go El Al because I have never flown them and because of their security (although I would assume Continental has employed Israeli security firm). However, I know their 747-400s don't have PTVs in coach and 10-11 hours without it is painful. Their 777s, I think have PTVs, but I am not sure. Also JFK is hell on earth.

However, with Continental, I would get mileage, a EWR connection, guaranteed PTVs and a trip on a CO 777, which I haven't experienced.

What would all of you fellow enthusiasts do?

For a second I thought you ment nonstop....I was going to say International out of DCA???(no way) But then I read the post and saw it was with connections, personally I'd go Continental and enjoy the 777 with the PTV. Continentals International service has been great for me to Europe and I'm sure it would be nothing less to Tel Aviv. Just my thought.

El Al does not fly from IAD.
That's why we're here.

If I was going to Tel Aviv, I would choose CO, just because I feel safer flying a US Carrier, rather than a foreign one, but it's ultimately up to you who to fly with.

Good Luck!!!

Appreciate all the comments.

Has anyone flown on El Al before?

People that I have known that flew them typically fly First/Business and flew coach on El Al. They complained about the El Al flight, but I am skeptical of their opinion because they have been so spoiled with the upper classes of service.

1)LY offers PTVs on its 744 and 772 fleet. (Y class).

2)I would not be troubled about CO's safety on EWR - TLV line.

3)LY Y seat pitch - 32''
CO Y seat pitch - 31''

4)IMO, CO offers better meals, but one can always argue on that.

5) You can be lucky and fly on CO's Peter Max 777

Enjoy your stay in TLV! (Molly Bloom's is the best pub in town  Wink/being sarcastic )

Funniest thing I've heard all day. El Al has the best security in the world, better than anything any US carrier ever has, or does offer. I would feel 600x safer flying on LY over CO.

I'd rather fly a foreign carrier any day, if possible (well, not like Kuwaiti Air) but you get my drift.

Perhaps you should consider Independence Air from Dulles. As of August 1st, they will serve IAD-JFK with hourly service. At JFK, you wouldn't have to switch terminals as both Independence Air and El Al use Terminal 4.

As for LY vs CO, either way is great.

You could get mileage on Delta if you fly LY. Don't worry about JFK. You would have to take the AirTrain one stop from the Delta terminal to Terminal 4. Also, you could fly Delta mainline(an MD-80) from DCA-JFK if you have something against RJs. Also, you could fly DCA-EWR and then connect to LY at EWR, if you love EWR (as your post seems to indicate  Smile ).

Personally, I've always wanted to fly LY just to see what their security measures are like! I would fly them if I were you, but if it comes down to a cheaper price or better schedule, CO would be fantastic as well.

Yeah, but then he has to check-in a JFK.

Did you ever fly an foreign carrier? If not, go with El Al.

Which would you rather fly more, a 747 or a 777?

I would, even though I have never traveled with either carriers, go with El Al.

In any case, have a safe and fun time in the Promised Land.

TranStar,

Yes, my mom did flew on LY to TLV from 7 years ago in the summer of July. She was very good flight on El Al and the flight was always full on their way to TLV. If can find with other airlines to TLV with CO or LY from EWR.

He has to checkin with LY At JFK anyway. I'm sure LY doesn't let connecting passengers just board.

Hey all,

Thanks for the great responses.

I checked this evening and got a $700 round trip on British Airways through LHR originating from IAD. This is versus a $900 on El Al and $1050 on CO.

Hopefully my flight from Dulles won't be held up for security.

El Al and CO 777-200s will just have to wait for another trip.

If you are willing to connect you have a lot of options. You may rather fly from Dulles to LHR and connect to BA there. Or, you can connect to LY or another carrier to Israel at a host of other cities in Europe including, but not limited to:

Turkish from BA), Turkey">IST
Iberia from BCN
LY/Swiss from ZRH
LY/BA from LHR

Of course if I was to fly nonstop I'd chose El Al. It is 10000x safer than CO and it does have PTVs on all of its 777s AND 744s. Also, El Al offers, IMHO, a more filling amount of food with better service than CO. In LY you are free to roam about the cabin. Unlike US carriers LY has found the balance between saftey and liberty.

May I suggest you use this opportunity to spend a few days in a European city? The fare will be about the same and you can get a cheap hotel @ priceline.

Not only will Independence Air be out of T4, but the same wing. Only a few gates to travel between. Now I know what they are building at T4. A small RJ area where gate 23 should be. I thought it was for them, but wasn't too sure.

A US friend and his Israeli wife who travel to Israel 2-3 times yearly use either Continental via Newark or Lufthansa from Dulles via Frankfurt. He has also taken El Al via Canada (Montreal or Toronto, he doesn't remember.). He hasn't flown via JFK in years because of terminal transfer hassle, delays, lost baggage, etc.

The safety issue doesn't seem to concern him especially.

You know an easier transition would be on AC through YYZ.

DCA-YYZ-TLV-YYZ-DCA all mainline no express all very nice service all star miles!

personally my first choice

I was wondering what they are gonna do at T4. So they are building an RJ gate, or is it a staircase down to the tarmac? Where exactly is it located? Thanks.

You people who pick your flights based on what type of IFE the aircraft has really amaze me. There are lots of ways to keep yourself occupied on an airplane without keeping your nose glued to the mini-boobtube on the seatback in front of you.

Try reading a book, doing crossword puzzles, learning a little geography by looking out the window. Take some aeronautical charts with you, and keep up with your flight path. You pilots out there can practice your pilotage, since you never know when your GPS or LORAN will crap out.

Really, guys. Sheesh!!

Totally agree with you. Never saw a full-length movie on an a/c. But still, just in case , I prefer to have a PTV on a flight.

The RJ gate it where 23 would be if the tower wasn't making it impossible for anything larger to fit. They installed the escalators this week. It looks like there will be room for 3 planes to squeeze back there when it's finished.

RareBear-

Choosing a flight over PTV's is a bit much, espeically if its more expensive.

But why do you care what people do on flights. Some people read magazines, some books, others watch movies. What is wrong with that?

Personally I am voracious reader, but on long haul flights of which I've done over 100, including lax-syd, jfk-nrt, tlv-ewr, its nice to relax and watch a tv show or a movie. At 4am not everyone wants to study charts!

Why don't you do what's best for you, and let other people do what's best for them.

------------
As for the topic at hand, ELAL has much improved, espeically with their 777s, and not having to stop in europe makes the flight much less tiring, since you usually have to connect at 3am East Coast time. But BA is fantastic, have flown them a number of times this year, IAD-LHR. Service is great, great IFE...all around fantastic flying experience.

Next time give ElAl a try...they're pretty good and their security beats the pants off of anyone else!

Enjoy your trip. Hopefully ELAL will serve IAD sometime soon  Smile

Thanks for the info.....Will the RJs be able to dock at the terminal, or do the escalators just lead to the ramp where the RJs will be?
