What # Were You In Line For Departure?

Fri Jul 09, 2004 12:07 am

I know while sitting on a 757 bound from EWR destined to FLL we were #37 for take off said the pilot. Has anyone had a number that was larger than this? I believe EWR has to be one of the worst for taxi out delays, does everyone agree?

Air Ontario Dash 8, YYZ, Summer 1999, #42... total wait 3+ hours.

Lets put it this way, Toronto+Only 1 available runway+1 hour airport closure due to T-Cells= really long lines.

And to make matters worse, i was sick (strep throat).

I was flying from atl to srq in January. We had a delay at the gate and had to change aircraft and gates. The delay lasted for about 40 mins due to a mechanical. Anyways, after we departed the gate we were #31 in line for takeoff...that was a long taxi.

i believe it was the summer of 2000 when the mid-section of the USA were having thunderstorms after thunderstorms. I was in ORD flying UA B777 (of course my favorite plane  Laugh out loud) ORD-IAD and all flights east AND south bound were on a ground hold. once we were finally released we were #45 i think. my 1 1/2 - 2 hr flight turned out to be about 7+ hrs. though luckily we had the chance to watch the inflight movies playing aboard so got to watch 2 movies and watch the same ones again once we took off (of course while changing to the ch 9 every 10 min  Laugh out loud!

I think I remember being #45 once, on an early morning LGA-ATL flight on DL. It was a very foggy morning and must have been in 1999 or so.

So after leaving the gate about an hour late (on an MD-80, if I recall), we taxied for a short while and then the pilot made that announcement. Everyone groaned - even though it was hardly Delta's fault. Still, it seemed the whole ramp area was a parking lot for aircraft waiting to depart. I remember seeing about 15-20 CRJs and ATRs out of my window and being glad I was at least stuck on an airliner with real-sized seats!

Never been in a line longer than 20 planes, but once spotting at MSP I saw a line up of 37 planes on 30L/12R and 24 planes on 30R/12L. Planes were also arriving on both runways, so after sitting and watching for over an hour the line was not even half completed.

I agree that Newark has got to be one of the worst, if not the worst, airport when it comes to departure delays. I can't remember a time when I flew out of Newark and waited less than 45 minutes to take off  Sad

00' was at IAD going back home to SFO and we were in the high high thirties. We had to return to the gate to refuel and get more ice and let a dog pee (the dog was return #2) so we didn't get off the ground for a few hours. I was surprised the pilot just didn't terminate the flight right then and there. Has anyone been on a flight that has been terminated due to the amount of time the flight will take or the crew timing out?

#23 - at EWR, where else!? That was a "normal" day.

Was also about #10 at LHR once. When we eventually got to the front of the queue, we had to go back to the terminal because somebody had heart problems (ambulance, offload bags, the works). So we had to join the back of the queue again!

I had to sit for more than an hour inside America West A320 on taxi ground in EWR. That was the day when Continental Airlines agent got hit by an angry passenger. Back in 2001.

I was once on a DL flight from EWR to ATL that was #47 for departure about a year and half ago. It took almost two hours from push back to take-off, longer than the in-flight time.

Not to be the trend-breaker here, but when I flew to LAX from EWR on CO in late December, leaving at 8:45 AM, there was no line whatsoever. We kept rolling along and turned right on to the runway - I thought it was a miracle. Even the F/A's seemed surprised when the captain announced for them to prepare for takeoff.

Everytime I fly out of EWR the pilot almost guarentees us that we will be taxing for an hour or so.

#30 for take off on an AA flight to Denver in April from ORD
#20 for take off on a DL flight to Denver in June from ATL.

Yuck.

I have similarly had no problems with taxi delays at EWR. Both times I have flown from EWR we had 5-10 minutes maximum between pushback and wheels up. I remember thinking that I should fly out of EWR more often.

Lately I've had no problems at LGA either. I can remember the days when it was assumed that you would be taxiing for at least 45 minutes. Maybe I'm just not flying at the "right" time of the day for that anymore. Most of my departures lately have been in the mid-afternoon, around 3-4pm.

On the other hand, when I arrived at JFK from PHX last night around 8pm, the queue for departure looked like a pre-9/11 queue, with planes lined up all throughout the airport. Also, when I flew into JFK two weeks ago, we landed and taxied almost all the way to our gate without any problems, but the alley where we were supposed to park was crowded with 2 DL 767s already pushed back and a Lufthansa A340 waiting to push back. We sat there for at least 20 minutes waiting for those guys to move to take their place in the loooooong departure queue. I felt bad for some of the AA Eagle RJs that were waiting to depart for their flights that were likely to be shorter than their taxi time.

Back in the day, JFK used to be death, so is EWR... but the worst delay I've had was 2 hours at ATL.
