Ever Flown To SYR?

Sat Jul 10, 2004 8:21 am

Has anyone ever flown to the Syracuse Hancock International Airport? What for? What airline? What aircraft? Just curious. Thanks.

I flew there with my father on a Mohawk BAC 111 from BDL sometime in the late 1960's. About all I can remember (I was just a little kid at the time) were the pay toilets in the terminal restrooms  Smile

I flew into SYR in March of '03 on American Eagle (ERJ) to ORD connecting to SJC. Not a terribly interesting airport. It was still cold, so we had to deal with de-icing and such. I was going to school an hour southwest in Ithaca at the time, so it was the only airport that had major airline service (ITH has only USAirways Express). I was headed to a job interview (never got the job).
That's why we're here.

I also went to college in Ithaca in the mid 80's and flew out of SYR a few times. One of the more memorable flights was in 1985 to Spring break in Ft.Lauderdale. Flew Eastern Airlines SYR-ATL-FLL on a 727. Drove to SYR in a t-shirt and shorts in 6 degree weather (we thought we were being cool) and when we landed at FLL it was 84.

Well I live in the Syracuse area. Have flown in and out of SYR twice now. First was for my job interview up here, second was last weekend to get out of town for the holiday. Flying J41s and CRJs courtesy of United Express and Independence Air.

There isn't much to say about Hancock. It is fairly small with two concourses. They have a cool play area for the kids in the middle of the main terminal that includes a cockpit from an old 727/737. Not much in terms of concession areas either. The only decent place that I have seen is the Au Bon Pain just outside of the north security checkpoint.

I've flown into SYR twice. In April 1986, I flew aboard an Empire F-28 in transitional Piedmont colors a month before they were absorbed into Piedmont. We'd flown PI from GSO-EWR, and our final leg was EWR-SYR-ROC. In June 1994, I flew aboard USAir (DC-9-30's both ways) SYR-DCA and DCA-SYR. There were a lot fewer planes around that concourse the second time around.  Sad

If anyone's interested, I've got a passel of April 1985 photos of SYR at the MyAviation.net section of Airliners.net. Type in SYR or my last name (Kruggel) and they'll come up. I also have some of that same set here at Airliners.net.

There was thread here recently about hodgepodge airport terminals, and I wrote a long piece about SYR. It's a neat old hodgepodge, but they ruined its charm during the 1992 expansion by painting everything light gray. The ugly 1980-era approach road canopy also destroys the view of the cool zigzag-roofed 1960-era main lobby building.

Well, I've flown out of Syracuse many many times. It's a convenient airport, not to big. I wish there were more airlines to choose from. And I wish AirTran would serve there again.

You must have posted while I was writing, DesertJets! Glad to hear they've done something fun with the old lobby. It's more or less superfluous now that you don't have to walk through it to get to the gates. Sure, the rental car counters are still there, but most people aren't going to stick around when they've just arrived, need to get their car, and be on their way.

I was always jealous that my own Rochester's old terminal never had any neat features like SYR's central zigzag-roof lobby. So I never took pix of it before its demolition--which I now regret. ROC's old brick terminal might have been staid but it was an early terminal, and like every other, part of aviation history.

The old center area actually does look kinda cool. I didn't notice it the first time I was there and picking up my rental car. But last weekend I parked on the south side of the parking garage and had to walk across the terminal to get to the Indepedence Air check-in counter.

The place seems definately much bigger than it needs to be. Sort of a sad testament to aviation and the economy in central NY. If you want to see/read something sadder... look up the Utica/Rome Airport website and read the history section.

My dad has flown into SYR several times on his way to Utica on Northwest (DC-9s) and Continental Express (ERJ-145s). He almost missed his CoEx flight once because he didn't realize that they started boarding so early. He had to rush through security; I think he said that the TSA called the airline and asked them to wait.

I flew a Delta MD-80 into Syracuse from Atlanta on May 28, 2004, for my brothers graduation at Cornell University in Ithaca

Sure, all the time. I live in Fayetteville, about 18 miles away from SYR. It's a pretty convenient airport for me- two miles down East Genessee Street, then hop onto the highway and I'm there in 15 minutes, tops. I, too wish there were more airlines/destinations to choose from, but I'm content with what we have. I think we're the only airport (along with ALB) in Upstate to get Delta mainline. Yay for business traffic!

Yes, I flew into Syracuse in June, 1997. I was headed up to Ottawa for Canada Day celebrations (July 1st), and I wanted to fly into an American airport for a domestic rental car. I flew in on Northwest on an ONT-MSP-DTW-SYR routing. I flew out a week later, but left from Albany, since I had never flown to that airport at the time.

I flew into SYR in 2001 when my DL-Flight from SFO to JFK was diverted to SYR due to a thunderstorm that causes JFK to close for about 2 hours. Our B767-300 seemed to be rather big for this airport and we spend this time on a remote position together with 2 UA Boeing 757 before we could continue our journey to JFK.
Born to fly! It's more than a passion - it's a yearning!! At home in DUS(Dusseldorf)!
