Oddest Direct Flight From Your Home Airport

Sat Jul 10, 2004 3:23 pm

What is the oddest direct flight from your home airport? I don't mean odd in terms of being a strange place to live...I mean odd as in "who'da thunk there'd be any demand for that?!"

For example, from one of my home airports, LGA, AA offers a once a week flight to Traverse City, Michigan, and 3 weekday flights to Fayetteville, Arkansas.

What can you guys come up with?

Mesa Airlines dba America West Express used to fly PHX to MTJ (Montrose, CO) which I always thought was kind of wierd. Montrose has a population of around 25000 - 30000 if my memory serves correctly, and is only 50 miles from GJT (Grand Junction, CO) which is served by HPX, DLX, and UAX. Never saw much of a point in that route, but I think they discontinued it last summer. Also, Great Lakes dba United Express was flying DEN - CNY (Canyonlands, Moab, UT) - PHX a few times a week. Not sure if they still do, but I thought that was kind of an odd one, too.

This year's effort: MAN-DAM by Syrianair - two weekly 747SP began last month.
Last year's effort: MAN-ALG by Air Algérie - weekly 737 (operated on something like 6 occasions only, started Nov 2002, ended Feb 2003)

There's not too many flights to choose from in the first place, but the oddest flight would probably be FAI-Frankfurt once weekly in the summer on Condor/Thomas Cook.

From SJU my vote would go to SJU-PIT on US Airways, and NWA's SJU-MEM both of them depend of tourist traffic/ cruise traffic.

Well, if the route gets approved, I would have to say that STL's most odd route is STL-CUN, operated by F9, once again, it hasn't been approved yet, but if it is, I think that route will top the cake from STL. Now LAS on the other hand.....hmm....I would say the PR A340 from YVR, the routing is AB) (MNL / RPLL), Philippines">MNL-YVR-LAS-YVR-AB) (MNL / RPLL), Philippines">MNL. I'm not complaining, because any cool aircraft is welcome to LAS, and STL!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Well the strangest route from my airport WAS, before Pan Am pulled out, MHT-Saint John, New Brunswick. I never thought anyone would fly that route, and a ticket on that route wass something like 200 r/t. They also had a flight to Bangor, ME.

Now the wierdest route is most likely MHT-LGA via DL and US

hmm, but MHT is the only decent airport with ok connections for the entire nh region.

i never flew into LEB because the prop service was always full from LGA as are the LGA-MHT flights, and the only other options to get to the upper valley was BOS, followed by a long, boring bus ride up to dartmouth.

The oddest direct flight from my home airport (ONT) was a short-lived Muse Air flight nonstop to Midland/Odessa, Texas (MAF). Muse Air served ONE for a sshort while in 1984, and offered nonstop service to MAF and AUS, in addition to tag on flights to other Texas cities through LAX. They also tried an early form of code sharing, offering conections in ONT to Air Cal flights to Northern California. The ONT-MAF flight takes the cake, though, and as I so wish I would have flown it when I had the chance, but it was gone before I knew it!

From MIA I am really not sure. There is demand for everything in MIA.I guess the MIA-PAP flight with AF it is daily with a A319 and on Sunday an ERJ.

Chepos: Dont forget MEM and PIT are both major Hubs for NWA and US. But PIT is going to close down so not sure if they will keep that flight. But MEM has plenty of connections for NWA.

Most definitely PRG-JED operated by Saudi Arabian Airways 777(!) 2x weekly. Since the tourist potential of Saudi Arabia is close to zero and there aren't any significant Saudi business interest in the Czech Rep. or Muslim population either, I can't think where the pax come form ???

FlyMIA Im aware PIT is currently a US Airways hub amd Memphis a NWA hub but considering US flies to other cities out of San Juan with connection potentials (mainly CLT And PHL) as well as nonstop service from SJU to BOS, LGA, IAD- I wonder how the loads are considering the other 2 hub possibilities used for connections. NWA and MEM is definitely one of the oddest ones in SJU, considering NWA has very liitle service and brand recognition in Puerto Rico and my guess is most pax are tourists originating in other destinations rather than MEM. I wonder what the loads are for both of these flights.

Oh, and another one I remembered last night, STL-JFK, with Comair. They operate the STL-JFK nonstop, but no return I guess...lol....Oh, and its with a CR2.

I wonder about the MAN-DAM flights as well. I understand a lot of interest was generated during the recent series of Hajj flights, but why DAM? Is it for transit to other places in the Middle East?

I don't really think MHT has any "odd" flights, as pretty much every flight from MHT goes to a major operation for that airline. The closest I can see as odd is Southwest's service to BNA and MCI, as both have daily 737s (BNA has 2), while BOS has no service to either city (Eagle dropped BNA, YX dropped MCI). However, WN does have the opportunity to connect pax through both cities.

As for BOS, the only one I can think of is KEF...it makes sense for connections, and Icelandair does do advertising in Boston to promote tourism to Iceland, but KEF is certainly not the first place you think of...

I live in Sydney and we have a direct service to Belmont just south of Newcastle. The service is with a Twin Otter and the flight is about 30 minutes I think. The odd thing is that it's about one hours drive on the freeway and yet to take a flight you'd have to be at the airport an hour before departure. So I could take my wife to the airport and she could fly up, in the meantime I could drive up there and meet her flight upon arrival.
Honestly though the views I'm told are well worth the flight and I'd be quite happy to do it sometime!
I remember when the DC-3 was new!

I believe that EWR had flights to JFK, possibly operated by CO or DL.

The oddest flight from PHX would have to be to the Sierra Vista Military Intelligence Base on HP.

I though that this was done by a Helicopter Service.

Many years ago, HP flew ICT to LGA non-stop and ICT to DCA non-stop.
This service was because their 737s could not make PHX to LGA or DCA non-stop. This was before the 757 or Airbus aircraft.

We've got plenty of odd flights from SYR.

US Airways Express flys to BDL (yes, I know- but there's demand from SYR?)

Continental Connection/Commutair flies to both ELM (if there's demand to ELM from anywhere, I will be amazed), and ALB (that, I understand).
