Whats Wrong With RJ's?

Wed Jul 21, 2004 9:08 pm

Come on people. RJ's are not as bad as people make out. I actually prefer them to mainline jets as there are less people, and its faster getting on and off. You are still in a jet, and the seats are generally leather too. Is that really such a bad deal?
Certain peoples attitudes to RJ are exagerated. For most people, they put their town on the map!

And at least you are spared the embarrasment of travelling on a turbo prop  Smile
And when you get off your hearing is intact.

Enjoy!

For many cities, the RJs have replaced mainline jets, not turboprops.
In ICT for instance, airlines switched from MD-80s, 727-200s, 737s, 717s, etc to CRJs and ERJs. RJs have not replaced turboprops in ICT.
RJs in some cities now require outside boarding. In PHX for instance, some HP RJ gates require you to walk across the ramp, in 110 degree heat.
RJs have no first class.
RJs are being used for some very long flights.
Carry on space is limited on RJs.

Here is what is being discussed in another forum:

RJs have no first class......... not true. You'll find first class on Northwest Airlink Avro's and on United Express CRJ-700's.

No F/C, They are cramped and passengers tend to get claustrophobic on long flights. I am bad, I wont even fly a 757 transcon. I feel more free flying the spacious twin aisle jets such as the 767/777/L-1011 on longer routes.

Having flown CRJ's many times with HP I would make the following observations:
On short trips, such as BFL-PHX (approximately 1 hour) the CRJ is far superior to spending one hour and 55 minutes on a Dash-8. The ride is smooth and relatively quiet and the seats are comfortable (2 across) although the aisle seat passenger may get bumped a little by the F/A.
In my opinion the criticisms about the design of the windows may be accurate but also slightly nitpicky.
I have also flown CRJ's on longer legs (PHX-DSM) about a 2 hour 30 minute flight and that is pushing it for a cabin that small I suppose.
The bottom line is that for those of us who live in markets where carriers can't justify flying mainline planes the CRJ at least keeps us in the jet age.

I really don't see what the big deal is. I love flying on ERJ's. I don't the see the thrill with widebodies either though. All I care about is my personal space. Who cares if you're on a 777....you only have so much space to yourself, reguardless if there are hundreds of others on the jet.

I don't have the money to buy F tickets or the status to get upgraded, so I'll continue to be one of the lowly souls stuck in economy.
