First Or Biz, Or A Whole Row To Yourself In Coach?

Mon Aug 02, 2004 10:24 pm

Not long ago I non- reved AMS-GRU-AMS with a friend of mine.
We were in C-class to GRU, this was offcourse very nice on the new 777 with
the massaging seats, avod , huge ptv's, fancy dinner and drinks , etc,etc...
Yet i didn't have a very good night sleep.
On the way back we were in coach, but the groundstaff managed to get each of us
a whole row to ourselves. ( 3 seats)
The plane wasn't full so I took 2 extra blankets and 4 extra pillows and made myself
a great bed. I had my meal , watched a movie, listened to some music and then fell asleep
watching the stars as I lied with my head at the window facing the clear nightsky.
I slept 8hours straight. It was the best sleep I ever had on an plane.
I never managed to do that on the 4 trips in C-class I had so far.
So in the future if I have a choice I'll go for the coach-row anyday.

Flying on ATA from LGA-IND in Jan I had a whole row of 3 seats to myself. Loved it. A whole row is better then 1st class or Business class.

Rubbish!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy
On a reputable airline, the First class offering is better than 3 or 4 coach. BA, QF, Virgin etc are fantastically comfortable...

Not entirely true. I've grabbed a 3 row on BA when booked in Club World when they had the cradle seats. While comfortable, it's no comparison to lying flat (even on the 'uneven' Y class seats).

Clearly, most of the issue was rectified when they introduced the new Club World (which I still think is one of the finest products flying---if not for the seat---for the staff).

First Class on BA? Only done it twice when upgraded. Suffice it to say it's about as perfect as you can get in terms of comfort and service unless you have a corporate jet...

I flew SFO-DFW on an AA 763, and not only did I have a whole row (yes, from one window seat to the next), there were not any people around me for quite a few rows. I was able to get a lot done, but I would not have minded some IFE and food.

I'd rather be in an F/J seat, not only because of the comfort, but also because of the food, service, check-in, lounge, priority luggage, etc. You know what I mean?

3 seats alone. I then recline all 3 seats....Pick up seat cushions and seatbelts drop under and proceed to lay down and sleep all the way.

I once screwed myself by getting an exit row on a red eye flight from LAS to ATL. Everyone else on the flight had a row to themselves (as did I). The only problem was that the arm rests on the DL 757 didn't raise so while everyone (and I mean everyone) on the flight had a row to themselves, I has 6 empty emergency row sets and couldn't lay down.

it is only good in Y class when you have 4 seats to yourself as 3 is rather short to make a proper bed.
Certainly, First or Biz is preferred but the above would work also.
Once, when I was a student a chap in my roll offered to sleep on the floor so I can have the 4 across and each one of us would have a bed!

it depends. if i get an entire row in Y i'll take it, otherwise i rather F. then again, for me to nonrev in F i have to pay $20, so it's not really worth it if the flight is empty and i can get an entire row.

I managed to get a row (3 seats) to myself by asking for a seat change right at the last minute (I was last on board). Turned out the only empty economy seats on the entire 747 were the two next to me!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Did get to try VS Upper Class once, but was loving it too much to sleep!

I also managed to get a good sleep on EK's business class 777 and 340. Not sure why since I have great problems sleeping on planes normally...

One of the best flights of my life was NW redeye SFO-DTW with 3 coach seats to myself. Got to lie down flat w/ no armrests/seatbelts...best nights sleep (or 4 hours anyways) especially with a few pillows. Though, NW's first class isn't much but on SQ i'd take first. -Matt in KITH

Best flight I have ever had was on a UA flight a few years ago from SFO-SYD. I was in the second to last row of economy in the middle with 4 seats all to myself. I slept for about 12 hours on the 14 hour flight. For the 2 hours that I was not sleeping I had a lady traveling with kids come have a sleep for 2 hours while her husband took care of the kids up at the bulkhead. She slept in the three seats while I watched the movie.

Copa Airlines flight PTY-MIA about a year ago, I had the entire back row (six seats) to myself. I planted myself in a middle seat, put on my headphones, and then watched a movie. Afterwards there was a a very spectacular lighting show outside my window due to some nearby storms. Reclining seats, who needs 'em?

I'd rather have First Class because of the space, comfort, food service, and other priorities. A row of seats would be nice too, but you don't get the First Class service.

Off point: this topic would probably be a better fit in aviation polls & preferences forum. On point: I would prefer a seat in first or biz. I get a bit nervous when flying and usually keep my seat belt on throughout the flight. Of course, you can't do this when stretched out over 3 or 4 seats.

Yes but do you really care about service when you're asleep?

Although I'm yet to try the fully flat beds available in some F and J products my experience of other F and J seats hasn't been all that good. Unless the thing is fully flat it's not worth having. It can feel like trying to sleep in a dentist's chair. I also find that you feel you are obliged to stay awake for the posh food and booze. Then you have to listen to some creep in the next seat trying to sound you out for business etc.

I have flown many times on long haul in Y with 3 seats to myself and it is those flts that I remember as being the most comfortable. When you've got some massive flt in front of you all you want is to get a bite to eat and then put your head down and get some Zzz for the rest of the trip.

3 seats in Economy for me every time!
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

This is a very perceptive point.

Non flat business class seats aren't that great, I think. The seats aren't comfortable for sleeping and create pressure points. I'f I'm paying for it myself, I try to get an empty flight and then get near the back of coach, in the center section of seats. Its great and I don't care about fancy food anyway. I can sleep like a baby across the seats in coach, and obviously the FAs won't be offering much service to bother me with; while in Biz class I find sleep difficult.

My idea is to have bunk beds in coach, stacked 3 high, maybe on the A380. Yes, it would be a little, cozy, but I'd settle for military style accomodation if I can only lay flat. In fact, I don't need any FAs, nor food or drink or anything, (I can bring my own) if I can only convince the airlines to do this and let me lay flat on a long flight. I don't know why it wouldn't be possible, since the human body takes up the same amount of space regardless of the position its in. Join me in my crusade for bunk beds in coach!

kind regards

RogueTrader, I have thought of that before but the problem is accessibility - while I don't mind (and am able to) climb up onto the top bed of a bunkbed I'm not sure that everyone would be able to.

Personally I'd rather have a whole row in coach than a first seat (admittedly I haven't tried first/business). I went Dallas - LGW a yr ago and I had a row, most comfortable.

I have posted a new thread which is kinda linked re quiet routes.

On any real airlines, F or C is 100 times better than Y class.

You can give me the entire Y cabin to myself and I would still want to upgrade. Laying over a bunch of seats uncomfortably (all the bumps and seatbelts) is no where near as comortable as a good C or F product.

Anyone who said a row of Y is better has not been in C or F on a real airline (Southwest / Am West / Cheap carriers do not count as a real airline)

I think a lot of it's individual.

As greg referred to, he really likes lie-flat beds. Me, I find all the lie-flats to be poor beds. I find I can sleep better on recliners than on beds, unless the beds are really good.

In other words, if you assume "average" than I'd rather be reclined than flat.

And there's no way at my height I can be comfortable trying to lay flat on three Y seats...even four is only so-so.

DFW-SFO on a UA 777 in '98. We had the entire center row of seats to our selves! 5 seats!!! My Mom sat at one end and my Dad at the other, I lay down between them and was able to get 6 hours of sleep, almost the whole flight!!!

Once I flew from AMS via LHR to HKG, on the LHR-HKG flight I had 4 empty seats all for myself, and I must say that it was more comfortable then a C class seat!

If $ is not an issue, F definitely is the way to fly. The overall experience, from check-in to lounge assess to boarding to inflt service and catering....everything is just heaven!

The best must be to have a whole 5 section row for yourself on a 777.
