Among The US Big Six: Worst Possible Merger?

Wed Aug 18, 2004 5:06 pm

Welcome to the time honored tradition of "Who wants to get rid of a competitor?"...I'm referring to a merger here of two of the "Big Six" legacy carriers, as in AA, CO, DL, NW, UA, and US...which combination of two would be the absolute WORST possible among them

The answer is: UA+AA.

It would either become a nightmarish monster that would make Aeroflot look like Midwest Express, or else it would become the biggest financial bombshell to explode since Enron.

Delta and US Airways-Both need a major capital injection and restructuring, also the airlines fleets are very different. Both are struggling to reduce costs to stay competitive while they both have a shrinking costumer base.

NW and DL!

NW would merge with DL seeing how they have issues right now. DL and NW's fleets are SOOO far apart I can't see straight. DL has 100's of 767's that NW wouldn't know what to do with. The 777's would go to good use. MD-11's would be back in service. The 737's and MD-80's would be good for when the DC-9's die out (which will be never). The 767-400's that are leased would probably be stored such as the 717's that AA got. And the bought 764's CO might take off their hands.

Route wise I don't know seeing how I don't follow these exact airlines as well as others but to me this would be the WORST match up fleet wise and the use of the a/c that would be given up.

thanks and great post!

They would all be equally disasterous and nightmarish. It isn't 1986 anymore and airline merger mania has come and gone. Even during that period there were not mergers that were on the scale of a big 6 would be today.

It would be hell for UA-AA, Biggest fight would be for AA to give up their name.

and paint their outdated scheme to our new white one.

UA+AA would be a nightmare.

It would result in so many monopolies across small towns in the midwest, plus a US stronghold over LHR. You'd have Star Alliance and oneWorld issues galor (naturally the combined firm would stay with Star which has a better global network).

Prices would go up throughout the country, seniority integration would be hell, fleet integration would be rough... not impossible though.

talk about a mega-carrier! British Airways would be so envious! They've always wanted to be a mega-carrier! (alluding to the book "Dirty Tricks").

Why the assumption that AA would be assimilated into UA? It would seem more likely that UA would be the one to disappear into AA.

Like DesertJets said, Any major would be disasterous. Times have changed and I think alliances such as codesharing/frequent flyer partnerships are a lot better.

No merger really seems to me very logical in the US at this point in time.

TW+AA!  Nuts

UA+US was a mistake from the beginning. Had nothing happened, both airlines would probably be in much better situations right now. God knows what would have happened had it gone through...anyone find it odd that Steven Wolf left UA and went to US, and then there were talks of mergers?  Wow!

American & USAirways. Their destinations and fleet would not mesh very well.

UA and AA would have to be my vote...way too many aircraft to manage.

"It would be hell for UA-AA, Biggest fight would be for AA to give up their name"

Perhaps, but they could call the new airline: United States Airlines, and prominently still display both the UA and AA symbols on the tail in some sort of mutual symbiosis.

So many possibilities... Perhaps the large aircraft could be named after the heros of the Republic, etc. It may be a good thing, and be far from the nightmare an American version of Aeroflot would be.

Tasha, I love your optimism. We need more people like you.

However, your optimistic idea is too optimistic. In this cutthroat business world the two airlines would fight to the death to be the sole brand. The American equivalent of "communist-era Aeroflot" would be awful. Reduced competition, jacked p ticket prices, and too many airplanes with the same paintscheme! AGH!  Nuts One could only wish for the two airlines to for a peaceful "sort of mutual symbiosis." This new airline would be the Dr. Frankenstine's creation of airlines. I can only hope to god it does not come to that.

Like I said Tasha, there need to be more optimistic people in this world, just like you. Maybe then a merger of AA & UA would go peacefully, if something like that ever happened.
