What Is The World's Busiest Airport That...

Sun Aug 29, 2004 5:12 pm

A) Does not see a single 747?

B) Does not see a single widebody?

I'd be extremely surprised if both airports were not in the United States, but I've been surprised like that before...could somebody answer that for me?

Those, BTW, are supposed to be two separate questions...also, I am referring to in terms of passengers...now that I've done some digging, I'd be shocked to find the first answer NOT be dAAllAAs-Fort Worth...

Criteria B makes criteria A irrelevant, because the 747 is a widebody.

Are there any passenger widebodies at Frankfurt Hahn?

If not DCA, it could be MDW now that the expansion has been completed.

Do John Wayne or STN take widebodies? If not, they're good candidates.

Busy "smaller" airports:
- BMA
- LCY
- Frankfurt Hahn

LCY is not big at all, there are much larger airports that don't have a widebody service. I'm pretty sure MDW is up there somewhere, I don't know the passenger figures but its much bigger than LCY and HHN.

STN is a very busy one-runway airport, what with FR alone having 25 (or thereabouts) flights in a one-hour period at particular times of the day, especially during the early morning.

The Essex airport handles 74Fs on a regular basis.

A) Surely DFW (excluding 74F operations).

B) Probably a domestic US airport serving a city that has its own international airport and runways not long enough to permit widebodies, so possibly DCA/MDW. STN would be a possibility but are there charters operating with 767s from there?

The first question is sooo easy!!!

It's my hometown airport of Dallas Fort Worth (DFW)!!

It had a proud history of 747 use in the 1970's with Delta, AA, Braniff all using 747's. In the 1980's, Lufthansa and Thai and AA continued the use of 747's.

In the 1990's, while Thai was gone, and LH switched to a 343, JAL and Korean Air used 747's, but, alas, JAL left and Korean switched to a 777.

DFW is a hub for MD-80's, 757's, 767's, and a few 777's. Sadly, DFW is not a leisure destination and thus for this and other reasons doesn't have many foreign carriers, loses them quickly with any downturn in the economy, and has no need for any huge widebody like the 747.

In Texas, for a 747, go to IAH, where you can easily see a KLM Combi every day....

Back home at SAN we didnt get any regular 747 service, but there were DC-10 and A310 freighters, and a few DL/AA/UA 767s.

What about ATL, do they get 747?

Yes 0.03% of departures from ATL are B744s. KE operates B744s 5/7 to ATL from ICN.

LGA must be right up there

With 343,843 annual movements in 2002, LGA was the 36th busiest airport in terms of aircraft movements. But you are right, they have no B747 service.

For the 747 question, I guess that it depends upon cargo movements since to my latest knowledge, DFW still received 747 freighters.

As for no widebodies, I am sure that you mean busy in terms of commercial operations, but just operations alone, Van Nuys, CA is way up the list. However, I get the feeling that you may be interested in results based upon commercial figures.

When you say "Does not see a single 747," do you mean scheduled? I ask because scheduled is one thing, not seeing a single 747 outright is completely another. CLE, for example, is very busy and has no scheduled 747 service. However, we see quite a few unscheduled 74's from the middle east.

London Stansted has to be up there for the 747 question if you exclude freighters...if you remember a few years ago a Korean Air freighter crashed when taking off from Stansted.

Don't forget SNA, was at one point the 18th busiest, not a single passenger carrying wide body. One FedEx A310 operated once a day in the evening.

The busiest airport with no widebodies is Los Angeles - Van Nuys (VNY). This airport is the 14th busiest airport in the world for aircraft movements....and has not only no widebodies, but no airline flights at all.

LGA total aircraft movements for 2003 were 374,450 and ranked 27th busiest aiport in the world, by aircraft movements. They get no 747 but do get widebodies, specifically DL767's.

CVG is 8th busiest airport by aircraft movements with a total of 505,557 in 2003.

Looking at the world report here in the JULY 2004 ATW i am seeing airports like:

VNY (Los Angeles, CA) - 14th 460,734 movements
DVT (Phoenix, AZ) - 23rd 388,669 movements
SFB (Sanford, FL) - 24th 385,303 movements

I don't know about these airports, but if they don't get widebody service they would be right up there on busiest airports with widebodies.

Alll airports above these get widebody and/or 747 services.

Although no passenger 747s come to CVG, NW Cargo runs a 747 into CVG three or four times a week. When one factors in Cargo operations this may get very very difficult.

LGA total aircraft movements for 2003 were 374,450 and ranked 27th busiest aiport in the world, by aircraft movements.

389,340 in the last 12 months. Still not as high as some of the other airports listed though, but would be ranked #23 now according to the web site posted earlier (though other airports' numbers may have changed by now also, either up or down).

Doesn't really matter as an answer to this question since it's still below some other airports, I just would rather see the most up to date numbers being used (the question asks about the "busiest airport", not the busiest airport according to the most recent yearly stats).

DUS does not have any scheduled 747 services (I think) - I recall that the runway is not lomng enough for a fully-laden 747. Can anyone confirm? They do have widebodies, though, eg LTUs 332 and 333 and Emirates widebodies. DUS is a pretty major airport.

"Denver WILL be up there after halloween when LH switches from the daily 744 to the 346. How about CCS they stopped receiving 744 a while ago?"

UA has flights to/from SFO, ORD and LAX with 744's. I think KE and BA still serve DEN with 744's.

"LGA must be right up there"-- true but LGA gets 767's from DL.

I would have to say little DCA is pretty busy-- as is SAN (which USUALLY has nothing larger then 757's, and a few 767's)...

Could SEA be a candidate? (just a thought)

Does EWR get 747s anymore? I have only seen VS A340s there, and they were the one regular operator of the 744 a while back. SQ now uses the A345, BA has the 777, AF has the 340/777, CO only has 777s, and the rest of the European carriers use 767s or A330/340s.
