Oddest Diversion

Tue Aug 31, 2004 6:33 am

Ok, excluding 9/11, what is the oddest diversion you've seen at your local airport. We've had some NWA 757's at Lansing but that's because we're right outside of Detroit.

A United 747 at WLG in the 1980s. Was diverting from AKL to CHC due fog but landed at WLG because of insufficient fuel (smack on the hand for the crew!)
WLG's runway is only 1835 metres long with the largest scheduled aircraft at the time being 767s. Smile

For MSY I'd have to say a Mexicana A-320 that blew in here three or four years ago. Was flying YUL-MEX, encountered stronger headwinds then were forecast, didn't have the required fuel needed to cross the Gulf of Mexico, reach MEX, and have the required reserves, so down he came.

The oddest diversion I've ever heard of has to be the Air Canada 767 that ran out of gas while flying YOW-YEG, and glided to a landing at Gimli.

Tom at MSY-- yeah, I think that's the one they called the "Gimli Glider" or something to that effect. A pretty amazing story.

When the UA 747-200 diverted to WLG I was at the airport waiting on a WLG-CHC delayed because of fog at CHC. In other words it wasn't so much fuel as running out of runways!

Things got tighter when the classics were replaced by 400's. A few years later I was on a UA 747-400 LAX-AKL where we diverted into NAN because of fog at AKL, with this decision being made an hour north of NAN. Chatting to the captain at NAN he said that CHC had still been clear but that they weren't allowed within 1000km of AKL unless both runways were clear at that decision point.

In fact Ohakea is the only other 747 capable runway in NZ, and that has received diversions from time to time. I almost drove off the road when a PanAm 747 landed over me there in the 70's.

Do any of the ANZ people here know what the inbound long haul rules are for AirNZ 747-400's when there is fog at AKL?

Not sure about any of the New York airports; I've only been here a short while. However, when I lived in Buffalo, I was actually on a flight from ORD to BUF that got rerouted to DTW after a couple of missed approaches.... hmmm.

We've gotten UA 777's more than once and I think one NW 747 (other than 9/11) in GRR. I think that there was perhaps an even more unual one that I am forgetting...

I will not tell the detailed reasons but here there are some of the oddest I've heard:

Aeroméxico 767-200 CDG-MEX diverting to Tampico, México (Fuel)
Aeroméxico 767-300 MEX-CDG diverting to Shannon, Ireland (Ill kid)
Aeroméxico 767-200 MEX-MAD diverting to Lisbon, Portugal (Fuel)
Aeroméxico 767-200 MEX-CDG diverting to Lyon, France (CDG was closed)
Aeroméxico 767-200 MEX-CDG diverting to Nice, France (CDG was closed, LYS too)

Not very odd, but we had a DC-3 come in TRI with an engine failure on a cargo run last fall. You don't see that too often these days.
