When the UA
747-200 diverted to WLG
I was at the airport waiting on a WLG
delayed because of fog at CHC
. In other words it wasn't so much fuel as running out of runways!
Things got tighter when the classics were replaced by 400's. A few years later I was on a UA
where we diverted into NAN
because of fog at AKL
, with this decision being made an hour north of NAN
. Chatting to the captain at NAN
he said that CHC
had still been clear but that they weren't allowed within 1000km of AKL
unless both runways were clear at that decision point.
In fact Ohakea is the only other 747 capable runway in NZ
, and that has received diversions from time to time. I almost drove off the road when a PanAm 747 landed over me there in the 70's.
Do any of the ANZ people here know what the inbound long haul rules are for AirNZ 747-400's when there is fog at AKL
