The Pax Sitting Next To You

Fri Sep 10, 2004 11:03 pm

Hey there, i KNOW this must have been discussed but a fresh thread never hurt right?  Smile Anyone have any crazy stories or interesting ones about people they've sat next to on flights? I have one so far, i flew from Ankara to London to see the 2000 Farnborough show, i took the dawn flight from Ankara to IST to connect and sat next to this guy, he looked normal, but when the strobe lights went off in flight and in a cloud during the dark hours, he began to flip out...and start twitching and all, my eyes were like a cartoon characters! apparently he had some form of Epilepsy sorry for the spelling everyone) and so he kinda was talking weird and saying some weird things to people and he grabbed me really hard and started telling me to not turn the plane, i was like WHOA im not flying, then he was like tell the pilot we CAN NOT TURN!! Everyone was freaking out at 5:10 am in the air so the purser came and i told him he was saying something about the lights on the wing and strobe, so the cap'n swtiched em off and he was a bit calmer, but he was acting weird till touchdown, then some medics came onboard..... and me...well....i don't wanna be a dr. EVER, let's put it like that!!

I made up a story to a "hot & young looking" passenger sitting next to me. I told him that I was a gay porn star (Falcon Exclusive star). He believed everything I said to him! He asked me how much I make per film scene ... I think I told him $1,000.... LOL

I never forget him because he was my favorite passenger who ever sit next to me. He was so nice to me. Open-minded, very mature.

Shortly after 9/11 I was flying SFO to LHR with BA. It was the usual night flight and most people were asleep but throughout the journey this passenger next to me kept getting up to get things from his bag in the overhead bin or to disappear to the rear of the 747. Fed up with constantly being disturbed, I ignored one of his requests to pass by but he just climbed over my seat, grabbed his bag and disappeared to the rear of the plane. Suddenly it dawned on me that he might be a terrorist. Rather shaken I went to the galley to inform the flight crew of my suspicions. The cabin crew informed the Captain who sent down the First Officer, only to find that the poor guy was an aviation enthusiast and trying to get a decent picture of the cabin at night.

I don't know who was more embarrassed - him or me. I hope he was not a a.net member (I was too shy to talk afterwards) and remembers the incident and me!

that's awesome about the porn star, i would have cried from laughing!

And BCAL, that it sounds like a tell tale thing, but i mean look at what happened just before your flight! I think you were totally right to do what you did and im sure now u feel it was the right thing to do. Hind sight is 20/20 and the world is filled with crazy evil people  Smile im one of those just not evil haha. Is BCAL for British Caledonean, if so, i used to live in Jeddah, and i have tons of dc-10 pics of BCAL!!

cheers!

On the way back to BRS from DUB on my last Ryanair flight I had a really hot (and single) girl sat next to me, she was constantly leaning over me to look out the window whilst on the ground kept pointing at any large aircraft and saying 'oh look its a jumbo jet', I so wanted to correct her but decided to let her continue making a fool of herself, which she did quite nicely. She talked for most of the flight and didn't seem to notice at all when we landed, oh before anyone asks she was not Blonde  Big grin.

Also on a slightly different line I have sat in the same seat that British celebrity Martin Clunes did during filming for the new BBC drama Doc Martin, the opening scenes were filmed on an Air Southwest DHC8.

Cheers,

Dan  Smile

Well, ok, I confess, she wasnt next to me, but was on the aisle seat, 1 row back from my row on the other side of the aicraft (739, CO, SAN-IAH). She was the character Rosie O'Donnell plays in A League of Their Own. (Forgive me I cannot remember her name). Anyway, she is in the Hall-of-Fame and everything....very nice woman as well.

I was flying SQ Brisbane - Singapore on one of their 777's in 1999, and this guy came and sat in the aisle seat next to me. I had the window seat so the seat next to me was open. He spent a good 10 minutes fumbling around in the overhead bin, then proceeded to slap his briefcase down on the empty seat beside me along with about 3 newspapers. The newspapers went all over the floor, infront of the seats and into the aisle. So as i'm staring out the window trying not to look, he gets his cellphone out and starts making calls! Everytime a F/A passed by he'd hide it under a piece of newspaper. This went on right up to the threshold of the runway at which time i decided enough was enough and snapped at him. He didn't say a word for the entire flight after that and boy was i grateful.

Cheers

I once sat next to a couple on a flight from Holland to Turkey. The woman was looking through the in-flight magazine, studied the airline´s route map and suddenly totally surprised said to her husband: "Oh look, Spain has more airports! Maybe next time we could fly to Benidorm!"
Apparently they´d flown once to Malaga...  Wink/being sarcastic

I well remember a flight - JFK to FRA on TW in 1st class. I was terrific tired as I had already LAX-JFK done before so I looked forward to sleep. An old lady was sitting next to me (unfortunately couldnt switch seat as F/C was full) and she was talking to me, telling me all of her life and probably the life of her family and neighbours too, she had tons of photos with her she showed me all the time. I tried to tell her various times (very polite of course) that "Im gonna sleep a little bit now" - no chance at all.
Well - when breakfast service started she looked at me and said: "See, I never can sleep on airplanes. It is so nice that this time I had someone sitting next to me also not being able to sleep on a flight...."
 Confused

Pilotaydin

Just seen your posting. Yes BCal is for British Caledonian - probably one of the best airlines ever to have graced the skies. Remember the advertising for the "Caledonian Girls" and the "airline that never forgets you have a choice"? Had BCal been able to secure slots at LHR, I am sure they would today be the UK's No 2 carrier instead of VS. They would today probably be ranked as good as, if not better, than Singapore Airlines and Emirates. I would love to see your BCal DC10 photos.

BTW I lived in Istanbul (Yesilhurt) for many years - my uncle was BA (then BEA) station manager at Yesilkoy for 6 years.

Regards,
BCal

Well, this didn't happen to me, but I was right across the aisle so I saw it happen, and it involved people I know (we were traveling in a group). We are on a Air France 777 going from ATL to CDG. Well, my friend who is a female was sitting in the middle, and she was sitting next to a boy and his mom. The Mom and son argued for about 2 hours on why he should take his pills, and the Mom kept telling my friend her whole life story and her sons whole life story. She said she was going to sleep but the Mom kept talking. Finally, the Mom and son fell asleep.
About 2 1/2 hours from Paris my friend is still sleeping and is wearing one of those eye patches that Air France provides. The lady pulls my friends eye patch off and sais "Wake up!", my friend ask "Are we in Paris yet?", and the lady sais "No! But its time for you to get up, we still have some more talking to do.", my friend looked like she was about to slap that lady.
BTW, the lady and our son were also in our group. When we got to our final destination to Nice we saw that they had not put her bags on the Paris to Nice flight. For the rest of the day all we heard was "I can't believe Air France lost my bags, did Air France lose your bags? Can you believe my bags are still in Paris while your bags are here in Nice? Would this have happened had we flown Delta? Did I tell you my bags are in Paris? I hope they are telling me the truth, I'd hate for the bags to still be in Atlanta". Sheesh.....it got even better on the trip (being sarcastic) this lady talked and talked and talked, and she asked really dumb questions - like when we were at Versailles she asked "Who picked up the poop back in the 1700s?".

I was flying TXL-DUS with one of LH's BA146. It has very little space and I felt as if I was sitting almost on the lap of this horrible guy: too-many-sessions-in-the-sunstudio-brown, too posh suit, long hair with loads of gel in. He tried to make some conversation: "I'm in the aesthetic-business, what are you doing?" (O man, what a way of expression! I had to concentrate on not laughing!!) He continued:"Cool aircraft, isn't it? Quite flashy, four engines on such a little plane! It's a very good performer, you know..." Well, at that point I couldn't ignore him anymore and told him with my most innocent girly smile that I was an air traffic controller and that a BA146 was certainly not a flashy aircraft nor a performer and if he wanted to talk with me about cool aircraft he should return with a 777.  Insane He was quiet after that. After the plane landed this was his good bye:"You're a pretty girl, I like your hair - just one advise: If I were you I'd start thinking about a brace!"  Wow!

CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS??!! Be careful with guys from the aesthetics business...

Somehow I tend not to believe such things, on top of that, you are in the 13-15 age group. How old was your little friend, 7 ?  Wink/being sarcastic

Thanks for the link Leviticus. This brought back some memories to me.

The comment said that we are never told what is so special about British Caledonian, other than the Caledonian Girls were pretty. Obviously the commenter was not around in the 1980s!

On an AI flight LHR-BOM last year, I was stuck in the middle with a Karl on one side und a Heinzie on the other! They kept talking to each other throughout the flight. I "offered" to switch with one of them so that they could be seated next to each other and I wouldn't be disturbed. But the bastards wouldn't move  Sad

On my flight from ANC to PHX I sat next to a South American woman who had a first class seat but instead wanted to sit in coach. She was nice, but she talked very softly with a thick accent, so it was very hard for me to understand. And to top it off, she rubbed & felt my arm.  Confused

My last flight, SEA-FAI, there was this guy who was sitting behind me. I had the window seat and I tilted the seat back maybe one or two inches so that I could rest my head on the wall between windows. Well this guy started kicking my seat and pushing it forward. So what do I do? I tilt the seat back all the way of course. Anyways, this guy was the most obnoxious guy I have ever seen on a flight. After I had put my seat back, he took off his shoes and put his foot up on my armrest and kept rubbing my elbow with it. He then got a sharp jab to his foot by my elbow. Later on in the flight, I had my light on and was reading. Well, this guy stood up and turned it off because he wanted to sleep. My response, "too damn bad", and I turned it back on. I was tempted to turn on the all the lights in my bank of seats (somehow I had all three to myself) but I refrained. Finally he falls asleep. You might think the story is over, but wait, there's more. It turned out that he's a loud snorer. So loud, in fact, that his seatmate punched him to wake him up. I snickered at that. About one hour out of FAI, the guy starts to whistle a song. Not a quiet, to himself, whistle. No, the guy was whistling a song for the whole plane to hear. I don't know what got him to stop his song, but he did stop abruptly and behaved for the rest of the flight. He was by far the most annoying fellow traveller I have ever had the pleasure of sitting by.

i was on a flight on US BWI-CLT-FLL, on the CLT-FLL flight(757) i was sitting in row 21A and there was a couple sitting in the middle and aisl seat next to me. OMG, you would think that they were sworn enimies the way they were fighting. i thought that the guy was gonna slap that girl. they were arguing about a car and who is going to use it or some stupid stuff like that. as we were beginning the descent into FLL but it dosnt end there.....the girl, in the middle seat right next to me, says to me: can u believe how this man it talking to me, we are supposed to get married tomorrow. it turns out that they were going to get married on a boat in miami. i didnt want to be dragged into their bickering, so i said excuse me and i got upo and moved just as the seatbelt sign was turned on, i moved as far away from them as possible, to the front right behind first class. we landed fine and then i could still hear the man yelling. he took his bag and left his fiance behind and got off the plane. the girl sat still in her seat and i could tell that she was crying. i didnt know if i should feel sorry or not, it could have been her fault that they were fighting. i got off the plane and headed to baggage claim. what i saw next surprised the hell out of me. the couple were holding hands and kissing eachother by the escalators. now is that a disfunctional couple or what, i think so.

great topic.

I remember Aer Lingus DUB-JFK, around year 2k, two priests in front of me (American judging by the accents) doing some *serious* flirting and cleavage watching with the pert Irish lass F/A. and no I'm not making this up. That flight was also the closest I ever got to joining the mile high club (with my then girlfriend)

In the worst long flight ever thread, I recall a LAX - JFK flight with a spoiled ten year old, but It was obvious the parents f**d this kid up, a shame really.

JetBlue JFK - BTV, some really large fat guy threatens to get nasty with a very young male F/A (he looked about 16) who also looked like he was gonna shit in his pants. Well me middle aged business suit guy and seatmate, pierced UVM student proceed to talk about what a fat dickwad the guy was throughout most of the flight. I know he heard us.
I may be ugly. I may be an American. But don't call me an ugly American.

Several years ago I was flying on America West from Phoenix to Anchorage. I was wearing a nice white polo shirt and khakis. The "SnackSack" that night was some small sandwhich and a small bag of tortilla chips and a small thing of salsa that was unusually good. I was on the window and the seats beside me were occupied by an Indian couple. As I'm eating my chips and salsa and watching "Never Been Kissed". They start to argue. Their voices raise and raise and one of them slams their hand down on the middle tray table and catchs the ladies tub o' salsa. It flips up in the air and lands on my shirt. They actually didn't notice and kept fighting for a minute....

Another time I was flying Atlanta - Phoenix on Delta. Purposely took the flight I did as it was a 767. The man next to me was drunk. During dinner he was trying to cut his chicken and somehow launched it over the seat and it landed on the guy in front of him. To this day I haven't figured out how he did it... but I know the guy in front of him was not half as amused as i was.

Which seat on the DH3 did you and Martin Clunes sit (not at the same time, of course) and on WOWA or B?
