Airline Flagship Flight Numbers - FL #'s 1 & 2

Sat Sep 11, 2004 4:55 am

UA
Flight #1 ORD-HNL
Flight #2 HNL-ORD

AA
Flight #1 JFK-LAX
Flight #2 LAX-JFK

NW
Flight #1 LAX-NRT-MNL
Flight #2 MNL-NRT-LAX

CO
Flight #1 IAH-HNL-GUM
Flight #2 GUM-HNL-IAH

Flight #'s 1 and 2 have always been known to be an airline's flagship route. Although not necessarily the busiest, it is still their their bread and butter route. Any other airlines you can think of? I'm particularly interested in international carriers' flight numbers.

For many years AF1/2 and BA1/2 were those airlines' Concorde routes to/from JFK. As of now, at least, they have been "retired," but I don't know if either airline plans to use them again in the future. Maybe when AF starts A380 service...who knows...

Air France and British Airways use to use flights 1 & 2 for their Concorde flights to JFK. It's soooo sad not to see them anymore. Off the top of my head, other 1 & 2 flights to/from JFK are Turkish to IST, Mexicana to MEX, & El Al to TLV. Virgin Atlantic uses their 1 & 2 flights to EWR from LHR.

Lufthansa's flight LH001 is usually one between Hamburg and Frankfurt, though that has occasionally changed: a few years back, I flew from Hannover to Frankfurt on LH001...

So far SQ is the only airline with a flagship flight # that doesn't originate in its home country.

I believe that AA1 and AA2 were designated so because they were the first and second nonstop transcontinental jet service.

Actually SQ 2 originates in Singapore via Hong Kong to SFO. SQ 1 is the reverse.

In the very early 1970's, I was a DL gate agent at ORD. Our first 747 flight wentORD-MIA, and was named "The Royal Poinciana" (sp?), The Poinciana is a flower that grows in Florida. Nobody In Chicago knew that. We would hand Post the flight number DL Flight 1, The Royal Poinciana, Miami. Yopu would not believe the grief we got from passangers..."They told me this was NON-Stop! Where is this Royal Poinciana, and how long will we be there?"
In Mia they called flight 2 the Royal MIdwesterner. The didn't seem to have quite the same problems we did. Our "royalty" was more demanding I suppose.

I'll check, but offhand I'm betting not.

AirTran has flights 1 & 2:

1: ATL-LAX

2: LAX-ATL

These are the Ryan Int'l numbers. Not sure if they'll change after conversion to 737-700s.

QF does not fly to LHR via LAX. QF 1 and 2 go through either SIN or BKK (can't remember). Additionally, UA 1/2 used to be their round the world service that would be a 744 that DEL-HKG-LAX-IAD and then more places I cannot remember. That was dropped shortly after 9/11

HP 1: PHX-ORD
They apparently do not have a flight two. I have taken both AA 1 and AA 2, it's pretty cool to hear that annoucement "Welcome aboard American Airlines Flight 1"

Looks like Delta is the only major carrier not using flights 1 & 2. Does anyone know why?

VS:
Flight One: LHR-EWR
Flight Two: EWR-LHR

Also, for a complete listing of airlines' flight number one, do a search, as it has been discussed many times.

Back in the late 70´s / early 80`s PanAm flew their around the world flights as PA1 westbound (LAX-NRT-HKG-BKK/BOM/DEL/KHI(depending on the day)-FRA-LHR-JFK. PA2 was the eastbound flight, all with 747s.
TWA flew their TW001 JFK-LAX 5pm with L-1011s.

You're right, QF1 is SYD-BKK-LHR and QF2 is LHR-BKK-SYD.

Anyone know what Thai Airways is?

I think their lowest flight number is TG100, which is the first flight of the day on BKK-CNX (Chiang Mai) sector.

Air Asia's lowest flight number is AK100, the first flight of the day on KUL-BKI (Kota Kinabalu) sector.

Thai Air Asia's lowest flight number is FD100, the first flight of the day on BKK-HKT (Phuket) sector.

That's what I thought as well... but wanted to make sure.

Thanks for the clarification.

Also, I didn't know there were two Air Asia's. I always thought Air Asia was a Malaysian-based low-cost, no-frills airline with KUL as its hub.

1 & 2 are usually reserved for non-stop flights between major cities. However iin the past it was a different story:

My 1946 Braniff schedule shows Flight #1 routing:
Chicago>Kansas City>Wichita>Oklahoma City>Ft Worth>Dallas.

TWA 1946 schedule Flight #1:
Montreal>Boston>New York>Pittsburgh>Columbus>Dayton>Indianapolis>St. Louis>Kansas City>Wichita>Amarillo>Alburquerque>Boulder City>Los Angeles>Fresno>Oakland>San Francisco>San Diego
Boeing Flown: 701,702,703;717;720;721,722;731,732,733,734,735,737,738,739;741,742,743,744,747SP;752,753;762,763;772,773.
