A319 And A320 Quieter Than 737 And 757?

Mon Sep 13, 2004 12:59 pm

I have noticed that Airbus' narrowbodies (A320 series) tend to be quieter than Boeings' narrowbodies (737 & 757) no matter where you are seated. Is this generally accepted as a fact? (no A vs. B war)

Not just narrowbodies, Airbus widebodies are quieter than Boeing widebodies.

I think that generally the CFM engines on the Airbus' narrowbodies might be marginally quieter than the Pratt & Witney engines.

What I have noticed on my last few flights on Airbus aircraft is that the changes in air pressure are more noticeable than on a Boeing aircraft.

As a non-passenger having almost all the traffic of Tunis passing overhead i can't say that A32S is quiter than 737s and 757s. Maybe things differ when you are on-board !!!

I've noticed that UA's IAE birds are VERY loud in F class (and the back as well). To my level of hearing, they are louder than the 737s. It's very hard to listen too, especially on a red-eye SMF-ORD! 777s and 744s are fairly loud, I've never flown a heavy Airbus so I can't compare.

From passenger point of view I find A320/319 certainly quieter than the Classic 737s.

I do mean as a passenger (inside the cabin).

I will clarify my original post. I feel the A320 series is louder than mid-gen 737s (300, 400, 500). The classics will always be louder, you can't compare an aircraft from 1969 with an aircraft from 1984-ish.

In front of the engines the CFM Airbusses are louder - at least during take-of -than the 737NGs (can't comment on other 737s), because of the famous buzz-saw noise. Behind the engines the 737NGs are much more louder than 32Xs. I guess it has something to do with insulation. 737 and 32X use CFM's therefore the engines can't be the reason.
The IAE Airbusses are slightly louder than the A32X Busses but they lack the buzz-saw at take-of. I think, but I'm not sure, the IAE busses are slightly quieter than 737NG's. During cruise the A32X with CFM are definitely the quietest.

NWA airbus esp. the A319 produce a loud ear splitting high pitched sound during takeoff, only noticable when sitting at the 1 left door FA jump seat.

757's don't do this.

So while cruising the A32X are quieter than the 737NGs...
Good to know!
