The quickest way will be to travel on one of the express coaches, such as JetLink, you can get tickets for around £5-10 and they don`t take very long providing there are no problems on the M25. It is by far quicker than getting the Gatwick Express into central London and then transferring via the tube to catch the Heathrow Express. I think busses leave every 15 mins and arrive at the central bus station in Heathrow.

As PlymSpotter mentioned taking the coach is the simplest and possibly the cheapest option. Here is the site for you to check out http://www.nationalexpress.com.

hmmmmmmmmmm how about one of VS reposition flights ?  Smile In lieu of that the National Express bus service works as well. or you can take the Gatwick Express train to Victoria Station, then the tubes to Paddington and then Heathrow Express train from Paddington to LHR.

This bus service is also a good thing if you´re doing some spotting at both airports. I once took the first KLM morning flight from AMS to LHR, spent some hours there, went to LGW by bus, had some nice shots there and went back again, to board a Kenya Airways flight back to AMS.

AeroFan,

Might be a stupid question but would it be possible to get tickets to a repositioning flight ? I know that it would work out in some rare cases but LHR-LGW ? Would love to do it though  Insane

God's sake!

EVERY time this comes up some fool suggests taking the Gatwick express and then the tube blah blah blah..........

Do you really think its preferable to be dragging suitcases up and down stairs, changing trains SO many times and having to deal with London commuters who don't want your luggage in the doorway of the train when the alternative is having your luggage put in the hold of a coach and then sitting down and relaxing all the way to Heathrow?

Don't get your panties in a bind. Did it ever occur to you that perhaps the person does not have any suitcases, just carry on. Your rant therefore becomes asinine. I myself have done the gatwick express-tubes-heathrow express and it is not as bad as you make it out to be. I much prefer doing this than the coach.

There is no such thing as a stupid question, so relax. Regrettably one cannot purchase tkts on the VS LGWLHR repositioning flight - at least not as yet. I will mention it to the next VS pilots that I run into and I will see what they say. You know anything to make a buck  Smile

Take the bus!, If you have luggage it would be definitely more convenient!

Why is taking the train SO much hassle? Two changes, big deal. Beats the hell out of coach on the car park that is the M25. One caveat - if you do have a LOT of luggage then it might be easier.

I tried the RailAir coach link from Reading a couple of weeks ago... never again, it was late, dirty, and doesn't even go to T4 so you have to drag your suitcases up and down stairs, change trains... It's premium fares via Heathrow Express for me in future.

It seems strange that apart from the coach link (which suffers from delays due to congestion and constant road works on the M25) there is no dedicated public transport links between London's two major airports. There is the train service, but that involves travelling into London and changing trains twice.

In the 1970s, there was a helicopter link between the airports. I believe that British Caledonian operated the service and the flight took 12 minutes. Obviously, a helicopter would not be a feasible link these days, but what about a small regional jet, which surely could get slots at Heathrow as they could presumably use the smaller runways?

Permission for the air link was rescinded when the M25 opened. In the early days the coach link was pretty reliable but nobody really predicted the huge growth in traffic that the motorway generated and the delays, despite road widening, that ensued.

Those who complain about the public transport connections between the London Airports should try travelling between the various New York airports, particularly between Newark and La Guardia. London is a dream by comparison.

Very good info here. I will only take 1 carry on, so I guess changing to the tube wont be a bad idea. How long will it take if I go that way?

Thx

Many suggest you should take the Gatwick Express to Central London (30mins £12) then transfer onto tube to LHR (40-45mins approx £4).

or

Gatwick Express to London Victoria (30mins £12) then tube to London Paddington (15mins £2) then on to Heathrow Express to LHR (15mins £13)

or just take the coach from LGW to LHR (75-85mins £17)

The choice is yours!
