Largest Airports In The World?

Sun Sep 12, 2004 4:40 am

Hi guys, can anyone provide me with a link where I can find the largest airports in the world in terms of passenger volume and aircraft movements? I know http://www.airports.org provides a good list of the top 30 airports, but is there anywhere where I can find a larger list of say...the top 100 or 150?

Thanks

I guess that's what happens in the end, you start thinking about the beginning.

I believe ATL is the largest in the world as far as passenger volume. I have no idea where you could find a larger list. It's a good question. Good luck!!

Here's a list of the Worlds Top 100 Airports by passengers from the December 2003 Airliners World magazine (data from 2002). You might also want to look at the Airports Council International - North America web site. They have the top 175 US and Canadian airports (2003) on their web site. http://www.aci-na.org/asp/traffic.asp?art=215 Click on the link at the bottom of the page to view the top 175. You'll need Excel or Excel Viewer to see them. Remember that only airports that are members of ACI/ACI-NA are on the lists.

Chicago O'hare has the most traffic all around.
London Heathrow has the most international Traffic.
Dallas(DFW) or Houston(KIAH).... is bigger than the state of road island ... i think and i forget which one it is. I believe one of the 2 are the biggest in land size in the USA.

Travis and Munich, GREAT JOBS! Thanks for your efforts.

Amazing traffic at London when you look at all three airports, 108 million passengers!
Compared to other major cities of the world, London is by far the leader in passenger air travel!
Combined numbers; Tokyo is 89 million, Paris is 70 million, Chicago is 87 million, NY is 82 million, but equally mindboggling is Atlanta, almost 80 million out of one airport!
Pittsburgh and St Louis are down over 20%, where did this traffic go? No one airport had traffic gains greater than the 7% of Chicago Midway. Was there really that much excess capacity in the US Domestic market?
Finally,

Stirling,

STL and PIT lost service due to US's downsizing at PIT, and AA's downsizing of TWA's STL hub. Expect those numbers to be even smaller in 2004.

This is off Massports website

Boston's Logan International Airport is the nation's nineteenth busiest airport and the world's thirty-fifth busiest airport based on passenger volume, serving 22 778 495 passengers in 2003. New England's largest transportation center, the airport boundary encompasses approximately 2,400 acres in East Boston, Massachusetts. Logan ranks nineteenth in the nation and forty-third in the world in cargo, handling over 363,092metric tones of high value cargo and mail annually, ranks twenty-third in the nation with 373,251 total movements, employs over 15,000 workers and stimulates the New England regional economy by approximately $6 billion per year.

No damn wonder the Chelsea parking garage is constantly full!

Out of curiosity, anybody out there know how many people are employed by DL in BOS?

It isn't that there is so much overcapacity, it is that there are some places that underperform so much, that the airlines cannot afford to operate some of the more profitable routes. There are some stations in the US that would be closed, except for airlines having to save face. It comes at the expense of places like LAX, where we have lost 13 million passengers since 9/11.

Oh, and on your list, you left off my hometown's little GA airport that could. CMA/KCMA, Camarillo CA has an average of 557 operations per day, for a total of 203305 per year. Pretty cool for an airport most people have not heard of

I think a lot of Chelsea Residents also like park there afraid their cars will be stolen LOL

As far tally, I dunno, but it has to be a lot. My company is Deltas contractor on their terminal A project and we are dealing with a lot of local personel not counting Massport.

I read an article on the net a while ago about the world's busiest cities for air travel. I remember it mentioned London was at 120 million a year once you factor in all 5 airports. Next I think was New York with 90 million (presumably from other small airports as well as the main 3 like Islip and White Plains). Can't remember any of the numbers for the others.

@ FlyLondon

You are right! If you include London-City (1.470.710) and Luton (6.785.815) there were been 119.786.404 passengers in 2003.

Largest Airports In The World?

Wed Sep 15, 2004 12:51 am

Can anyone explain to me how come ATL has such massive passenger movements.
I mean 80million pax annually for a city that counts 400.000 inhabitants(if my info is correct).
I don't understand how ATL beats airports like LHR, FRA, JFK, LAX, ORD,CDG etc
And also what is the transit-rate on these 80million pax, must be well over 90%???

Simply because ATL is the key DL hub, at the centre of the hub and spoke system, so a large proportion of passengers are connecting.

Also ATL is really the only airport serving Atlanta, and equipped with four runways it is well placed to cope with 80 million passengers. LHR is not as busy partly because it is very slot constrained due to two runways, and partly because there are LGW, STN, LTN and LCY as well. In terms of cities, London's five airports total around 120 million passengers which is far ahead of any other city. As regards airport movements, a relatively small amount of movements at ATL are widebodies when compared to LHR. With so many widebody movements, LHR does not need as many total movements to achieve the same passenger throughput.

How many of these large airports have the runway capacity that DTW has?

6 Runways in operation.

LHR27C gave a good explanation of why ATL is so busy, but I wanted to address the population figures. Atlanta had 416,474 people in its city limits in 2000. However the metropolitain population was 4.1 million in 2000. It's probably closer to 4.2/4.3 million now. You have to remember the airport serves more than just the people in the city limits.

Even though a lot of ATL's traffic is connecting they're still in the Top 10 O&D metros in the US.

AeroFan: I have used ATL twice for connecting to Canada. Also, at least 90% of the pax generating from Colombia are using ATL to connect, i assume that also happens with other destinations.

As per their websites, 2003 passenger numbers are:

ATL- 79,086,792
LHR- 63,468,620

And number of movements:

ATL- 911,723
LHR- 463,650

Obviously more widebodies coming into LHR.

Atlanta has a merto area population of 4.3 million (not just 400,000 in the city limits) and only one airport serving it. The county I live in on the NE side of Atlanta has about 700,000 people in its' boundaries alone. And there are 3 other counties outside of the city limits with about 700,000 people in each. That adds up quick.

Just think, DL is adding over 100 daily flights to/from ATL next month, so the numbers should go up a bit. They will then have over 1,000 daily flgihts out of ATL (when you include their wholly-owned connection carriers).

What a huge drop STL had....we used to be in the top 10 busiest airports in the U.S., and probably in the top 20 busiest airports in the world....oh well, #41 in the world is still pretty remarkable...I guess

B741;
I'm guessing that your list includes transit passengers. Is there any list for O&D passengers?
P.S. thank you.
