Airlines That Need To Join An Alliance

Mon Sep 20, 2004 12:37 pm

Upon reading a post in the Civil Aviation section about Swiss being denied to Sky Team because the "don't need a failing airline" I thought of this post.
I think their should be a new alliance by something like the Universal Alliance and have airlines like

Emirates
America West
Hawaiian
JAL
Turkish
SWISS
EVA Air (already partners with HP with codeshare)
Aerolineas Argentinas
Dragon Air

Those airlines don't necessarily have to be in the same alliance but I feel they need to join one to better prosper in the Aviation World

I agree with Swiss and Emirates. I'm not sure if MAS and SAA have already joined one. BR also code shares with NZ on AKL-TPE flights.

MAS has finally decided last month that they are now really for alliance. Apparently they have already made a decision as to which alliance they will join, but it will all be revealed in due course. Expect official announcement from the airline in a month or two. I guess the answer can only be SkyTeam.

Emirates do not need to be in any alliance. Looks like they are planning to fly to virtually everywhere in the world non-stop (in theory they can do so with A345 or 777ER), making the whole world connect in Dubai. It's the alliance that needs EK more than anything, rather than the other way round. Sorry to break the news that Emirates will stay solo for a very long time to come.

In my concept Avianca. But unfortunately it's financial situation is critical and apparently no alliance seems to be possible soon.

I hope AV get over it promptly.

KEno... I also think MH will go to Sky, but meanwhile there is no nothing sure and OW can be another option, although the most logical will be Sky.
JAL have no any decision, but if they join to an alliance, for sure will not be Star.
In a next future, AR could join Star.

SAA have already joined Star.

I can think of a few who should still.

Ethiopian
Air India (I'd bet Star)
PIA
Emirates
Qatar Airways (although what's the betting they've already picked Star ?)
Malaysian (Skyteam, dead cert)
CAAC
China Airlines (although they probably won't owing to upsetting PRC).
JAL (Oneworld, very likely)
Philippine Airlines
MEA (Skyteam, dead cert)
Aerolineas Argentinas (Oneworld, if any)

Emirates has stated that they are not interested in any global alliances. Just a few code-shares.

If all goes as planned, MEA will be the first carrier from the Middle East to join a global alliance. It should happen sometime next year, either the 3rd of 4th quarter.

It seems rather strange that JL and EK do not belong to an alliance, however keep in mind that both companies are very powerful and have many agreements/codeshares with other airlines.

JHP. you are wrong... If Aeroelineas Argentinas go to join to any alliance, it will be Star Alliance.AR is under control of Marsans, and Marsans is managed by G.Pascual, current CEO of Spanair.
AV could to join OW or SkyTeam.

In my opinion, Copa and Taca are ready for joining alliances. Between the two, I see Copa joining SkyTeam due to their ties with Continental and the aforementioned alliance.

Aerolineas Argentinas (Oneworld, if any)

I believe Oneworld will not need another South American airline either. They nabbed the best thing the continent could offer in terms of airlines, and that is LAN, and I guess that will be enough for them by now considering the carrier's extensive network throughout Latin America, specially in the southern cone.

JGPH1A, you gave the right hint. Just to clarify: I do not work with AI nor did I consult anyone close.. but the analysis I am doing at the moment definitely hints at an AI membership with Star in the future (the reciprocical free-floating code-share with LH on selected flights, negotiations with UA, AC and BD etc... - but especially the former). In the short-term, Star might not benefit, nut 100% in the long-term...

The only thing I am interested.. if AI joins star: will they stop cooperation with AF et al? If this is the case, than I would not recommend AI to join it.. the selective code-sharing in doing better...

Edit: After thinking a little more and re-reading the topic: I am not anymore sure whether a global alliance membership is a benefit for AI (meaning, if they have to give up their individual alliances as consequence..??? )

There is no way that LA would allow AR to join the OneWorld team. Aside from that there is really no need for them to join that alliance as LA compliment Latin America quite nicely. Although TAM could very much be a force in South America if only they could increase their international routes.
AR would blend in nicely in Star. Irrespective of RG as a member, both units could fight off the challenges made by the LA-IB-AA force that fly to and from Europe and the states!
