Odd Rituals You Act Out Before Boarding Or T/O?

Tue Sep 21, 2004 4:08 am

I'll be flying in just two days here. . .which got me to thinking about how I have a simple little act I carry out when I am boarding the plane:

I always make sure I pat the outside of the a/c before leaving the jetway and stepping onboard. I feel almost as if I'm "patting" the airliner to let it know that I trust it will be a "good" airliner and get us to our destination. This just happens to be a habit I got into quite some years ago and find it just a bit odd and humorous. Now, my wife makes sure she sees me pat the airplane and also does it herself! Oh well, anything for reassurance I guess. . .

Anybody else do anything like this. . .or similar?

I usually try to look for the manufacturer's plate, which is in the the door jam. Not that I'm concerned about a plane's age. I'm just curious as to the build date of the aircraft.

I also have the habit of patting the fuselage when boarding, for much the same reason as DIA does. Just my affectionate why of "saying hi" to the aircraft that will bring me to my destination  Smile

I also look through the gap in the accordion portion of the jetway, to get a perspective view down the side of the plane...then I do the same thing as you when stepping onboard - but with a knock-knock rather than a pat.

Just a knock for good luck & to be sure it's solidly built - ridiculous, but superstitious...

I always read the emergency instruction card, even though I think I know where the exits are and what to do if we land on water. I will do this even if connecting in a hub and going from one like airplane to another.

I don't think I'm paranoid - its not like I am scared of flying or believe that we will crash. I guess it is just that I feel, in some bizarre way, that if I read the card then I will not need to use it! Even though I don't "pat" the aircraft, I can appreciate the superstitiousness of it.

Oh my!!! I tap/pat the outside of the plane too, sometimes I get carried away. Like on the 747, I was rubbing her down!  Wink/being sarcastic

I did think I was the only one that did this too! I also like to have a little peek in the cockpit as you board, love to see the guys up there preparing!

Cheers,

When I get on my byke I feel safe and do not feel to go through any ritual. Same when I get on a plane, for the simple reason that I am used to fly frequently and on long haul since I am living alternately on two continents.

Cheers. Kilavoud.

I always touch the outside of the plane when I get on, like Bill Clinton did.

Not odd I suppose, but if I´m travelling with my girlfriend I always give her a kiss before taking-off.

LOL, add me to the list! I almost always give the plane a pat. It's not for superstitious reasons, but just like Airdolomiti said, it's a sort of way of saying "hi" to the aircraft.

I also try to get a glimpse of the flight deck if the door is open.

And add me to the list for people who pat the plane before boarding. For reasons I cannot explain, patting the plane is like saying "Hello old girl, get me to my destination safely!"

I sometimes get odd looks from people behind me when I perform this ritual!

I'll admit to patting the aircraft with my left hand as i board.....i also wait untill we're lined up on the runway to fasten my seatbelt. I know i should do it when i sit down after boarding, but i've always waited right untill the end.

Cheers

Fuel Shutoff in
Alt static in
master on
switches set
seat belts secure
trim set
transponder on/alt
altimeter set
gyros set
gas on both

ready for takeoff!!!

For those who fly a C172 you know what i am talking about

Yep I pat too and always read the Safety card. I forget to pat the plane a few times before what ever. Also I always try to take a look in the flight deck. Love seeing them get ready too.

Ok, this will sound really wierd, but I actually do talk to the airplane while T/O! It's also due to the fact that I usually fly alone ... i think i'm really losing it!  Nuts

Yep, I give the plane three pats with my right hand while walking through the door. And I always fasten my seatbelt as soon as I sit down - once that's done I reach for the safety card and give it the once-over, no matter how many times I may have flown on that particular aircraft type. Once I've done those three things, I can relax!

I give the airplane two knocks as I enter. A "good flight" to the both of us. Big thumbs up

I didn't realize that everyone else patted the plane before getting on. When I'm on CO, I'll pat whatever award logo they are displaying at the time next to the door. Once in my seat, I'll take a quick look to make sure the airline magazines and safety card are there. Though I don't always peruse the magazines, I like to know they're there.

Hit the bathroom as soon as I can tell they are getting ready to call pre-boarding (sooner if the restrooms are a long way from the gate).

Find my seat, turn off cellphone, stow my bag, sit down, belt up, set watch to arrival timezone and read the safety card.

Boarding-

1. Greet the aircraft as you would a person, identify registration.
2. Say hello to FA. Go to seat.

Sitting-

1. Place boarding card in seat pocket.
2. Chewing gum/sucking candy in mouth
3. Buckle up.
4. Peruse safety card
5. Stare out of the window until takeoff.

I just got the updated figures for september, and it turns out that US carriers alone spend more than eight million dollars a year for repairs involving the door frames and/or the paint job around them. For a strange reason, 97% of these repairs involve the port side of the aircraft (this figure has a 3% inaccuracy tolerance).

The FAA is asking Airliners.net members if they can come up with a reason for this strange phenomenon?

Smile/happy/getting dizzy count me in, guys! Another plane-door-knocker! Boy, how small the world is...

I think I usually go overboard with mine oh but what the heck

Before boarding

1. I say hello to each of the engines and give them names like Charley and Susan
Onboard-I give two pats on the aircraft as I board
2. Find my seat and turn the air nozzle from full to off and back
3. Go to the bathroom
4. Read saftey card througly even though I always preety much fly the A320
5. Try to decipher the Japanese
6. Give some words of encouragement to the engines that I have named Big grin
7. Take out the magazine and check the fleet of each airline (even though I know what the fleet is....)
8. In the magazine, check what drink service is avalible (even though I already know)
9. Glare at the people in the bulkhead and emergency exit
10. Kiss the window

Ahh..... yes, I make sure to do everyone of the following before I board. Obsessive-complusive....yes.......but it must be done none the less

I can't believe it! I, too, thought I was the only one who gave the a/c a "pat" before boarding and thought/prayed something to the effect of "Get us there safely!" Now here's the clincher... Any of you pat the fuselage on the way off the plane and say thanks when you arrive safely?
