I like the Fokker 50 very much. On the outside it indeed isn´t the most modern plane in the air, the straight tail fin gives it a classical look but it does make this bird have an own trademark.
The noise level, with its powerful engines and six-bladed propellers, is quite low. Much lower than the "modern" Dash 8-300 and older ATR´s. In the cabin also, except for take-off, the noise level level is very low. The Dash 8-Q300 should be silent, which it is if the NVS works, otherwise... The newer ATR´s, with six-bladed propellers, are very silent also though.
It´s a very reliable and sturdy plane. The design is thorough and has quality, not that much cheap plastic like on the Dash 8. The cockpit has a very efficient and logical layout. Most pilots who flew Fokker 50´s and got converted to Dash 8, do prefer the Fokker´s flight deck.
Although the Fokker 50 is slower than most modern turboprops, on short flights it makes almost no difference. Furthermore the plane has a very good range and on many flights outcasts the Dash 8-300. On Spanish flights, a fully loaden Fokker 50 can fly Madrid-Melilla and back without refueling, there´s no way a Dash 8 could do that.
Well, as you see for me it´s F50 vs DH3, because those are the two types I always flew with when working for Denim Air.
