Fri Sep 24, 2004 2:20 am

I have been to LAX but never to any of the others and was wondering what LA area airport is the "best" or nicest one to fly into?? I am thinking about trying one of the alternative airports when i fly out that way in December. any information would be appreciated, thanks  Smile

Long Beach Airport is perhaps the easiest airport to fly into, next is Orange County/John Wayne Airport.

But come on, if you're into airliners and you don't get to Los Angeles that often, why would you NOT want to see all the variety of aircraft and airlines at LAX?!

ONT also has a beautiful modern terminal. LGB is a classic, making you feel like you've stepped into a time warp.

I'd recommend BUR. I only made the trip once, but it was quite smooth in terms of getting to LA.

It really depends where you are going in LA. Burbank is nice because it is close to the city and is really small, but the terminal isn't that great. Orange County and Ontario have really nice and small airports. The atmosphere inside them is very low key and they are almost never crowded compared to LAX. They offer a more relaxing way to get to the suburbs of LA. I personally like ONT a lot and the drive to downtown is not that much further than it is from LAX with traffic.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

We really need more info:

1) Where are you flying in from?
2) Do you want an airline with a VIP club at the airport?
3) What part of LA are you going to?
4) Do you need a rental car?
5) Is someone picking you up?

If your final destination is: Use this airport:

The San Fernando or San Gabriel Valley: BUR

Downtown/West Los Angeles: LAX

South Los Angeles County: LGB

Orange County: SNA

Inland Empire/San Bernardino area: ONT

Keep in mind the Los Angeles metro area is enormous...and the freeways are usually crowded and full 24/7. Have a wonderful time!!

If you want to experience a very short runway, try BUR
(thought we weren't going to make it without running out of runway)

1. I would be flying from IND

2. It does not matter if there is a VP club

3. I am going to LA to get to that Mojave trip (that is currently being planned)

4. i will probably need a rental car.

Burbank would be your best best. Traffic on the 405 around LAX has reached legendary proportions (Angelinos stay away from there if they can!!), and all the other airports are farther south.

Getting onto I-5 north is a snap, and if you don't hit traffic, the drive up to the 14 shouldn't be too bad. 14 north goes through some pretty dramatic scenery on the way up to Palmdale/Lancaster. High desert after that until you get to Mojave.

My fave is SNA (special take-off no extra charge) . Depends on which airline and what kind of plane you want to fly on . I flew into LAX in july only because I booked a seat on a UA 744. If it wasn't for the 744,I'de for sure use SNA. It's such a clean, modern compact airport.

If you are going to Mojave than why not fly into LAX cause at the end of the day if you get stuck and miss your flight or something happens and you cant make it there arent that many flights you could take out of BUR or airports of that nature Just my opinion though.

The Bob Hope BUR Airport is the closest to Mojave, but my vote goes to Long Beach. Just because I like that old art deco looking terminal, the cafe serves up good food with a good view, and there is a neat pilot shop just off the main terminal. Ain't bad for spotting with the big military cargo ships, old DC-3s flying out to Catalina and the birthplace of the DC-9.

Is BUR modern, or from what I've seen of it, very...un-high tech, and from the pics in the database, it looked like it didn't have jetways? I'm flying out of it on January 1, to SFO, on a Skywest CR2. What are your opinions on the airport? Thanks in advance!

BUR is great. No jetways, classic building, sparse facilities. I am usually off the plane and at my car within 4 minutes. Try that at LAX!

I used to fly to SNA lot, and I really like that airport. Easy to get in and out. Short walk to the gates and to rental car counters. Also, the take-off takes you out toward and over Catalina Island, a very nice view of the island from the air.
