The CRJ Vs The ERJ

Sat Oct 02, 2004 10:10 am

I personally do not like to sit next to anyone on the airplane, so I really enjoy the ERJ with its single seat row. I also like the view out of the window, where I do not have to crouch down to see outside. I also enjoyed a little longer of a flight from MSY-MCO, whereas I couldn't wait to get out of the CRJ on a CAK-CVG route. Why is it that the CRJ is so popular, when it is so very uncomfortable? I cannot imagine the poor souls and how sore their necks must be on two hours and longer flights. The CR7 is a little better, as I recently found on a flight from BIL-SLC, but I still prefer the ERJ. Thoughts from your flights?

I refuse to fly the CRJ if at all possible. I find them that uncomfortable and like you could not wait to get off the plane after a short flight......

Have you ever been on CRJ7? They are really pretty sweet, as is the ERJ145er.

I have never been on a CRJ7 though to be honest with you unless I experience it because of a schedule change I will not fly the CRJ family again. I try to keep my flying on CO proper as there fleet of express planes are of the ERJ family.

I prefer the ERJ over the CRJ hands down. I enjoy the single seat, higher windows, and the jetway compatibility (it's not fun running out in the rain to board a CRJ). However, I pretty much learned to get used to CRJs since it's what we mostly get. The reason why CRJs have sold more is that the CRJ has been available longer than the ERJ. Also, from an operational standpoint, the CRJ has a better dispatch reliability.

Well the CRJ beat the ERJ to the market by 4 years. CRJ first flight was in 1991 and ERJ was 1995 so it won a lot of orders. Airlines like Delta quickly learned of the benefits of regional jets after watching Air Canada and Lufthansa operate them. Basically timing allowed the CRJ to become the basis of many airlines regional fleet. CO and AA however waited for Embraer and they are certainly pleased with the product. Embraer even made the ERJ 140 specifically for American Airlines because it wanted a 44 seat regional jet.

Also the CRJ is just a stretched version of the challenger business jet which dates back to the late 70s. So in reality the Embraer jet is a much more modern development. The CRJ 700 is an improvement because it is a mostly new design and not just another stretch of the Challenger. Horizon Airlines studied both planes and found that the CRJ 700 had almost the same operating costs as the CRJ 200, but had 20 more seats. Overall the CRJ 700 is a better plane than the CRJ 200, but again Embraer seems to be beating Bombardier by waiting and developing an even more superior plane (EMB 170 series). Bombardier has some reliable customers that are still getting CRJs for fleet commonality, but overall the ERJ is tough competition and is winning orders from new airlines. However the CRJ is still a good competetive plane (please don't flame me too bad for my opinions).
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

i think the crj is the most beautiful plane in the skies

doesn't mean i'm comfortable on one though... i'm 6'3" and can't stand up tall on a 200 nor can i see out the window without a sore back.

but they look nice

yes

can't wait to try an erj for comparison's sake.

In terms of looks, I think that the CRJ-200 is a much more attractive airliner than any of the ERJs. I might be biased too, as I travel and spot frequently in CLE and I am sort of ERJed out! I get a good balance in FLL between the two. Anyway, in terms of comfort and for a smooth ride, I might have to take Luv2fly's stance and avoid CRJ-200 flights in the future. The CRJ-700 is still very nice and I'd take a ride on those aircraft any day. I am waiting to try out the new Embraer aircraft once jetBlue takes delivery....

From someone who is 6'4" I truly enjoy the ERJ. I try to fly US when I can as most of their flights out of SDF are on ERJ. CO too!

The CRJ7 windows are at a much more plesent height then the rest of the CRJ family, as are the windows on the ERJ145er.

Hey NO C versus E wars....  Big grin

I've only "done" the CRJs once, but I've done many ERJs and I guess I am more familiar with the ERJs and do like the single seat.

I must say my flights on the Do328Jet were actually very nice and roomy compared to either ERJ or CRJ for what it is worth, but Great Plains is no longer with us LOL.
The ARJs, as noted above, are nice also.

Is the EMB 170-190 family classified as a "real" RJ now?

I'll fly on the CRJ's without a problem (I have two scheduled within the next two months), but I despise the cabin windows being so low on them, why I keep on booking window seats on them I'll never know...

Count me in as an ERJ fan. I love the single seat side, for one thing. But mainly I just do not like the CRJ for the reasons already mentioned here. I've never been on the CRJ7, though, so I'll reserve judgment until I have that opportunity.

I plan trips to get on the ERJ and avoid the CRJ, when regional flights are part of the itinery, which of course means airline choice is involved. AA and CO often, DL mostly NOT as the option mostly seems to involve the CRJ with them.
