If You Could Travel Back In Aviation Time?

Fri Oct 08, 2004 2:00 pm

If you could travel back to any point of time in the existence of powered flight, where and when would you go? What would you try to experience for sure? For me going on a 747-100 domestically would top the list.

Also, seeing the launch of Apollo 11 in July, 1969 would be ideal.

I would stop Avianca from giving those bonds out in 1998...thats when all the crisis started. I would also stop DL from signing that ridicoulous contract with their pilots...

Are we allowed to bring stuff back in time with us?

If not I'd just go back to Kitty hawk and beat the crap out of the Wright brothers and take the flight myself, giving my name to start of aviation. Then Pa can have "birthplace of aviation" on it's lisence plates instead of ohio.  Smile

It would be to fly on B707 in the height of its era, and would love to fly a BAC 1-11 and a constellation. The luxuriousness of flying, not to be like that anymore.

I would love to have been able to fly some of the Empire flying boat and Pan Am Clipper routes, back in the 30's - taking 2 weeks to get from London to Joburg, or to Sydney - bedrooms on board, stewards making afternoon tea, stopping overnight in Khartoum - fabe !!

Or better yet (political DEEP incorrectness aside) taking the Hindenburg from Berlin to New York, or the round-the-world trip. Wow.

Also I'd like to have flown on a Stratocruiser, and the first 747's with 8-abreast coach seating and a piano bar upstairs.

I wish I could go back to the days when you could travel a cross the pond on a DC-10, and then fly across the U.S in a DC-9............ oh wait, I can still do this with NW.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Hmmm...I think my username will give away my fantasy if it was possible, but here goes......fly segments across the U.S. on both the 990 and 880.

Having been able to take a short to medium range segment in the original 727-100's would of been awesome as well.

I would go back to 1947, so I could witness the 2nd "golden age". As for Apollo 11, been there done that. Growing in 30 miles south of KSC, I got to see every manned Space Flight up to the first flight of Columbia. And I got to see them close up. I don't remember the Mercury flights, I was to young, but my parents took me to the beach when they went off. I do remember the Apollos very well. Nothing, and I mean nothing is as impressive as a Saturn V.
Nothing that I have ever seen, anyway. You could feel it thumping you in the chest from miles away. They used to take us up to the Cape in school buss to see it. What a field trip. I am glad I was able to witness it.
But as for 1947 I would have liked to been at Muroc Dry Lake to see Yeager go through the sound barrier. I would have also liked to have flown in a Connie.

I would go back to 1965, fly Caravelle, DC-8, Comet, VC-10, Vanguard, Trident, Convair 880/990, DC-6, DC-7, Super Constellation, Tu-104, Viscount, Heron, Herald etc and spot a few days at Heathrow, Amsterdam, New York... Oh and when I'm back there anyway I would like to see Frank Sinatra, the Beatles, Duke Ellington and Ella Fitzgerald perform life  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Might sound silly, but if I could travel back in aviation time I would like to see DeHavilland solve the pressurisation problems with the Comets before they entered service. If that happened, I wonder if Comets might have outsold the 707s?

I would also retire that piece of metal from the runway at CDG that made the Concorde crash. I would get the terrorists at the airports in Septemer 11, 2001 before they boarded...
