When I was Air cabin Crew on 707s of BOAC, I did around the world every month for over three years, 1963-66. The trips comprised 21 days away, with 7-10 days off before doing it all over again!
Routings started in LHR
and varied, but used either FRA
, then on to KHI or THR or DEL, then BKK
, RGN, SIN
. When using SIN
, a sidetrip to SYD
was thrown in!
The trip normally continued from HKG
to TYO, then HNL
, back to LHR
, slipping at all points on the way! There were three flights each way every week, not on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, but on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, which meant five days slip in TYO when leaving HKG
on Sunday, five days in HNL
if flying from TYO on Sunday (arriving in the morning of Sunday!) five days in SFO
if flying from HNL
on a Sunday, then a quick 24 hours in NYC before returning to LHR
Very often, we used to meet out respected colleagues from PanAm along the routes, but unlike BOAC their RTW services ignored the whole continent of the USA, starting/finishing JFK
, so PA were not really Around the World!
We also had a nightstop in HNL
westbound for reasons I shall not go in to here, but it was great fun having chats with female passengers on the SFOHNL sector to make prospective partners in HNL
for the brief overnight stay!
All in all, a great time was had by all, and some of the happiest moments of my life!
