Round The World Trip, Have You Done It?

Wed Oct 13, 2004 5:29 am

My round the worl trip was MAD-JNB-SYD-AKL-SCL-MAD. It was my childhood dream come true. How many here have done something similar and what route?

When I was Air cabin Crew on 707s of BOAC, I did around the world every month for over three years, 1963-66. The trips comprised 21 days away, with 7-10 days off before doing it all over again!

Routings started in LHR and varied, but used either FRA,FCO,ZRH, then on to KHI or THR or DEL, then BKK, RGN, SIN or HKG. When using SIN, a sidetrip to SYD via DRW was thrown in!

The trip normally continued from HKG to TYO, then HNL, SFO, JFK, back to LHR, slipping at all points on the way! There were three flights each way every week, not on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, but on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, which meant five days slip in TYO when leaving HKG on Sunday, five days in HNL if flying from TYO on Sunday (arriving in the morning of Sunday!) five days in SFO if flying from HNL on a Sunday, then a quick 24 hours in NYC before returning to LHR.

Very often, we used to meet out respected colleagues from PanAm along the routes, but unlike BOAC their RTW services ignored the whole continent of the USA, starting/finishing JFK or SFO, so PA were not really Around the World!

We also had a nightstop in HNL westbound for reasons I shall not go in to here, but it was great fun having chats with female passengers on the SFOHNL sector to make prospective partners in HNL for the brief overnight stay!

All in all, a great time was had by all, and some of the happiest moments of my life!

Bon Voyages!

My parents are soon setting off on:
ARN-LHR-JFK, HPN-ORD-Wiichita-DFW-SEA, SFO-LAX-MEL-Hobart-MEL-Hamilton Island-SYD-Joburg-Kreuger Park-Joburg-LHR-NCE-ARN

That will be their 3rd around the world!

I have done it. Running from IAD-LGA-JFK-NRT-HKG-FRA-IAD. CRJ-Bus-777-744-744-777. Was in First or Biz on the long segments except for HKG-FRA which was in Y on LH. Was nonrevving for the trip, so took my chances.

Mine was all in F-Class:
SEA-NRT-SIN-BLR-DEL-FRA-PDX-SEA just over a year ago on UA, Indian Airlines, LH. It was a great trip and it was all done in just 7 days because around the world was the cheapest and fastest F-Class fare to India.

(btw, this should go to Polls and Prefs)

I'm very lucky in that I have to go to Australia for business and always do a RTW - I'm too old for long haul west to east flying.

Basically I get in as many miles as possible and see as much as possible. An average trip, starting in SYD might be SYD-MEL-PER-HKG-ICN-HKG-BKK-SIN-LHR-VIE-LHR-CAI-LHR-ORD-DFW-MIA-AUA-MIA-LAX-AKL-SYD.

On various trips I will switch out VIE & CAI for MAD, BCN, ATH, HEL or any other European city that catches my fancy at the time. LHR is generally where I will go through for connections.

The great thing about this is that I can look at various cities/countries as possible places for business while avoiding the cost of going there on a separate trip.

RTW trips are the best option I have seen for seeing all of the fantastic places in this world - definitely worth the money.

I think so, on account that TED is United, isn't it?

Also, is it possible to go around the owrld on Northwest ONLY? We use my mom's employee benefits, and we only fly NW since it's free, but sometimes we'll throw in a couple hundred bucks for all 3 of us to enjoy WORLD BUSINESS CLASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Smile/happy/getting dizzy Smile/happy/getting dizzy Smile/happy/getting dizzy Smile/happy/getting dizzy Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I did YYZ-YVR-HNL-CNS-SYD-PER-SIN-BOM-LHR-YYZ back in 1989. It was quite the trip, luckily, the SIN-YYZ legs were in Business class. I'll do it again soon I hope, differant route, longer stopovers.

Is it possible to do it with only one airline?

Only if you fly SQ JFK-FRA-SIN-EWR.

It *might* be possible to do it with other single airline, IF you count their flights that are codeshared on other carriers.

e.g. NW (+NW codeshared on KL)

I believe you can do it with SIA if you count EWR and JFK as two airports in the same city. Semantics come into play  Big grin

Did it seven years ago - how time flys!

ORD-YYZ (UA 732)
YYZ-ORD (UA 757)
ORD-YVR (UA 733)
YVR-LAX (UA 727)
LAX-AKL (QF 744)
CHC-SYD (QF 744)
SYD-SIN (QF 744)
SIN-LHR (QF 744)

Having seen the delights of SFO this year when (rather than if  Big grin) I do such a trip again I'll have to visit the Golden Gate again.
